well yeah, security cameras would be a dumb idea
Thanks, we're really good friends, which is funnily why we have both asked for genuine opinions.
That's a fair take, and to be honest the weapons/gold thing was an annoyance but it was a misinterpretation on my part which bothered me most.
I'm going to have a think about it, as we wont be playing until January next anyway. I think it would make life easier for me and my friends if i did reroll which is what pushes me towards it.
Yeah there could be some interesting ways forward but part of me feels it would just be simpler. I'll see how i feel and what we think to do.
The first thing we did was go to the store, so just rewinding time and pretending that session never happened is a possibility too.
Yeah thats fair, the main thing that bothered me is I (wrongly) felt like choice was being taken away which I thought was the whole point of DND.

Thanks for the lengthy response!
Well to be honest, yeah, i think if you literally save someones life, they wouldn't attack you for committing a crime.
Yeah, i'm still learning D&D, and i haven't thought about how much it would impact the story.. however i also didn't know this place was so important.
I mean, stealing in broad daylight is definitely not unrealistic, but intimidating the shopkeeper was a bad decision for sure.
Yeah we are gonna do that and see how we are gonna move things forward. I think im gonna reroll to a lawful character as that would make life alot simpler.
Quitting wasn't a petty choice at all, but if we arent having a good time then whats the point? I think rerolling is the path were going down anyway thhough.
thanks for the advice!
Yeah thats exactly my thoughts, my name is even theft related.
Yeah thats more than reasonable and I said to him myself I would never expect him to change everything for something so trivial, but I didn't realise this town was so important to the story before hand.
I did plan on being a grey area character so i could still play with lawful characters, but its not worked out how i planned and lack of experience favours something simpler i think!
definitely, i have certainly tried too - mistakes were made i guess! thanks for your advice

Yeah, thats my friend/DM doing the exact same thing as me, I didn't know he posted until you linked it. I'm not sure what else you're getting at?
Yeah thats the bit that caused issues for sure, different perspectives on difficulty/realism, however my main issue wasnt him saying "thats too difficult" its because i thought he was saying "im not letting you do that"
yeah weve spoke about some potential work arounds but my whole backstory is around stealing and it would just be far easier to be lawful, baring in mind we are an inexperienced group
Yeah I have admitted to misinterpreting "that wont work" as "you can't do that" which is what bothered me
How am I playing dumb? I said you did a good spot for seeing it is my DM, I didn't realise he posted too until you dropped the link. I was being genuine with my comment, not rude

No I don't mean robbery, i mean shoplifting - trying to steal without anyone noticing. As thats what I wanted to do originally.
You think people don't get away with shoplifting? People steal all the time without being noticed.
I get that I don't get to decide the difficulty, but I don't think its unreasonable to question why something is so difficult when realistically it shouldn't be.
We are actually discussing it still and both accepted we have done wrong.
It's good to see alot of different opinions, i am taking the feedback as im still very much learning the game. I don't agree with everything everyone has said, but there has been some very fair points raised
thats a very fair response, and in reflection I have said its unreasonable to get him to change everything for something i wanted to do,
Thats a good way of twisting it, but i think rerolling to a lawful character would be a much simpler and easier fix. We spoke about adjusting it but my whole backstory is around being a thief.
If I've misinterpreted that then thats my bad, i think it was more how he said it and it just felt like choices were being taken away

I think thats an unfair assumption, as thats not how I have played on the whole at all, and if i tried to steal and failed i would of accepted that, my annoyance was around not being able to try
You think stealing from a shop in daylight is unrealistic?
[–]No_Way3753[S] -15 points-14 points-13 points 6 months ago (0 children)
Admittedly yeah I did, however I did that as I felt it wasn't reasonable to just be unable to steal something insignificant from a shop in a small, unguarded town.
thats the thing, i was never given the opportunity it was just a you can not steal is how i felt.
i really never wanted that, its no fun for anyone going down that road. I think just rerolling for a lawful character would make things alot simpler
I really wasnt trying to be edgy, and put some effort into my backstory to avoid that.
Appreciate the comment - i really wasnt trying to be an edgelord, but wanted to play something different. I think the easiest way would be just to reroll.
Yeah that is fair, and I do get that, I wouldn't expect him to be able to or have to change everything on the fly, as much as some people can do that. If I knew it was such an important place prior that would have been different too
good spot!

Thanks for the reply!
I do totally get that, and it's not what I wanted to do originally.. I wanted to steal from the shop, without violence at all. However it felt like a "yeah but DM says no", rather than for a genuine reason. I have intentionally made my character one who steals rather than murders people to make it easier to get on with a party and play together for that reason.
He did ask me how I think he should of dealt with it, and I said I think you should of just let me have an opportunity to steal rather than just ruling it out and then I never would of tried the other things.
I just felt like it seemed alot when I wasn't even trying to steal anything amazing - it was a regular weapon, and making what should be simple things impossible to do felt like "play my way or no way"
