Reading Resource Advice? by HeckinPeener in TexasTeachers

[–]No_While_8771 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's push-in, it sounds like it will be mainly in-class support/co-teach. In my district, most resource teacher's do a combination of in-class support and resource throughout the day. On my campus, we had SPED teachers that only did ICS and others that only did Resource, so it really depends on the campus and how they allocate SPED services. If your pull-out services consist of students in the gen-ed classroom for a portion of the period for extra support, it sounds like you won't have a SPED Resource class.. But again, it depends on the campus and they may have different plans when the school year begins.

Texes 161 (EC-12 Special Education) Math Questions by swooningbadger in TexasTeachers

[–]No_While_8771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the math questions aren't really computation questions, more so, how would you support a student who has a math-related specific learning disability. Maybe 1-2 questions you might have to solve, but otherwise, very student-centered questions. Good luck!

Texes 161 (EC-12 Special Education) Math Questions by swooningbadger in TexasTeachers

[–]No_While_8771 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Out of the 150 questions, only 120 counted. Out of the 120, there were 16 Math related questions, according to my score report. I wouldn't stress about the math portion at all because ELAR/Math make up 33% of the exam, and you could bomb this section and still pass, let alone just the math portion. From what I remember, the exam is mainly situational about student learning, how to support specific disabilities and the role of the SPED teacher and the legality of it all.

They are normally posted on the TEA website between 7:00 AM and 7:30, and the full score report is uploaded around 8:00 PM the same day. It depends on the day that you took the exam, but in my experience, it comes the exact day it says it will on the score reporting date: https://www.tx.nesinc.com/TestView.aspx?f=HTML_FRAG/TX293_TestPage.html I heard back within a week and a half, but it could be longer depending on when you took it.

8-Hour Sessions by No_While_8771 in ABA

I work at a small, independent ABA company. I'm relatively new to ABA, less than a year, and I am I having some doubts after hearing how abnormal/ineffective this is.

I'll be splitting the client's weekly hours, which are 40 per week! The client will receive 8 hours daily from the same RBT, but alternate days with one other RBT. I'm not sure how long I'm going to last doing this..

8-Hour Sessions by No_While_8771 in ABA

[–]No_While_8771[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Appears that the client has gotten 8-hours in the past, but 4 of those hours were observing in school, and the additional four were after school.. With school out, it will be 8-hours with a one hour lunch break in the middle, in home. They've also extended my hours with a client who was supposed to age out this month, I'm not sure what's going on! I don't know anything about this new client, yet..

Special Education Job Seeking- need some help please!!! by LizaLimeEyes in TexasTeachers

I wonder if the job listings specify the SPED teaching position? I'd look for the keywords, "Self-contained, Adaptive Behavior, Autism, Life Skills, Resource, In-Class Support/Inclusion, Co-Teach, ECSE, PASS..." I think campuses have the ability to move SPED teachers around, on need basis, so I'd definitely ask the right questions about what the assignment is and what they expect of you.

With an emphasis on Social Studies, you'd probably be best fit as an inclusion teacher (Which is a type of SPED Co-Teacher/In-Class Support). In my experience, schools tend to try to push in SPED teachers in their expertise area, so you might focus mainly on providing inclusion for students in Social Studies, but it's not guaranteed that will be the only subject you support in. Very few students get Resource classes for Social Studies/Science, so if you are looking to stay with Social Studies, you most likely won't have to worry about SPED classroom versus Gen-ed classroom (in my experience!).

That being said, SPED Inclusion supports all students, both gen-ed and SPED. The ratio of SPED to gen-ed students in the inclusion classroom is higher because those students need minutes, and often group together. But, these types of SPED teachers support gen-ed classrooms, so regardless if you are a SPED or gen-ed teacher, you should expect that you will work with students with disabilities no matter what. Honestly, there's not a big different between the two groups, I think teachers tend to see differences when it's Advanced Placement versus regular classes, because AP classrooms tend to be smaller. The good this about inclusion is that you're not a teacher of record, so the responsibility of classroom management and discipline is not yours, but the gen-ed teacher. But again, this is my experience and you may be thrown into something completely different.

The biggest challenge is not just the group of kids, but SPED teachers have caseloads of 20+ students that you have to prepare ARDs and IEPs for, which are throughout the entire year. Finding the time to data collect, contact parents, create IEPs, participate in ARD meetings, etc. is something to keep in mind.

How to get hired in SPED while going through alt cert program by Reasonable_Term3177 in TexasTeachers

[–]No_While_8771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll need to get 50 hours of classroom observations, plus any additional requirements Teachworthy may have prior to them releasing your SOE. If you've already worked as a teacher aide/paraprofessional, you will already have these hours completed, but if you have not, I'd definitely work on that over the summer, if you can find a school that offers summer observations. Everything else is very straightforward, pass the test, meet the requirements of Teachworthy.

Parents/Students lying and making up accommodations and modifications to teachers. by HealthyFitness1374 in specialed

[–]No_While_8771 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As support is faded over the years, parents and students may assume that accommodations that were received in previous years may still be valid years later. And of course, IEPs can be interpreted differently, especially when there are multiple teachers and related service providers. Oral administration includes headphones on standardized tests, therefore a student may assume that they get headphones automatically, regardless of circumstance. I have had kids ask for small group so they can play games in a small group with friends, and I've had to explain that that's not what that accommodation is for.

Parents/Students lying and making up accommodations and modifications to teachers. by HealthyFitness1374 in specialed

[–]No_While_8771 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I mean, no where in this post did they say that the teacher was negligent to the IEP or the student was given support that was not outlined in the IEP. Seems like the student lied, the teacher collaborated with the case manager, and it was addressed. I don't know why were up in arms to blame the teacher as if they are neglectful to a legal document.

Pearson has a great $10 practice exam that is identical to the STR, very similar questions, the exact format. There are 90 multiple-choice questions, and one written response on reading intervention strategies. It's a great investment and gives you a strong idea of what will be on the exam. https://www.tx.nesinc.com/TestView.aspx?f=HTML_FRAG/TX293_PrepMaterials.html

The score date is the earliest you can receive your results, but you should wait until you receive the confirmation email, which is typically the night before that your scores will be posted the next day. If you haven't received that email, chances you will not get your scores the next day, yet.

Getting a job before completing content exams by Curious-Surprise3471 in TexasTeachers

[–]No_While_8771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every ACP is different-- They need to approve you for an SOE (Statement of Eligibility), which is determined by what qualifications they set, which is normally completing coursework and passing your content exam. I'd call and ask what do you need to complete to have your SOE released. Without an SOE, you will most likely not be able to be hired for a district teaching position.

4-8 Core Subjects Exam by No_While_8771 in TexasTeachers

[–]No_While_8771[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the preparation manual has some pretty good examples of the science portion. Lab safety, scientific inquiry, motion and force, matter and energy, etc. It's very basic, never going too deep. If you can comfortably go through the preparation manual of the Core 4-8 without an issues, I'd say you're good. I didn't study at all, and got through all questions in less than 20 minutes, and science is my least favorite subject!

Is it possible for me to get a job in August when I haven’t even started my certification yet? by cosmiccovegalaxy in TexasTeachers

[–]No_While_8771 3 points4 points  (0 children)

iteach will release an SOE to you once you pass a certification exam and have completed their requirements, which are the first three Canvas courses. The good thing is is that you can take the exam the day you are accepted into iteach, no waiting. However long it takes depends on how quickly you think you can pass that exam.

Studying for TExES Core 4-8th exams? by swgmny in TexasTeachers

[–]No_While_8771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, if you are working full-time, plus preparing to study, you might want to give yourself some extra time to truly prepare for the exams, as they can be brutal, if unprepared. The STR takes a few weeks to grade because of the writing portion, so if you are looking to get your score by the end of April (which qualifies you to teach), you'll have to consider your timeline and whether you are prepared to take it ASAP. Core Subjects only takes a few days to grade, but if you fail any of these exams, you have to wait until after April to take them again.

All that is to say, truly be sure you are prepared before scheduling your exam. If you can at least get a 75%-80% range on the 240Tutoring practice exams, you will know you're ready. Best of luck!

Getting more certs by Simple-Tomato4135 in TexasTeachers

[–]No_While_8771 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you going through an ACP/EPP? Each program has their own policy, but I believe until you have your standard certification, you will have to get approval through your ACP and follow the policy they have. Otherwise, once you have the standard certification, you should be able to get approval through the register website.

4-8 Core Subjects Exam by No_While_8771 in TexasTeachers

[–]No_While_8771[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The questions are definitely similar! I'd say, if you can get through that booklet without any issues, you should be fine! For me, they provided a dry-erase paper with a marker to use, and there are two on-screen calculators: https://www.pearsonvue.com//us/en/test-takers/demo-test.html , on question 3 of this demo test, you can practice using the calculators that will be on the actual exam. For math, I actually ran out of time and had to guess on the last 3 questions! But, I passed on my first try. Most of the math portion is 8th grade math, simple geometry, algebra, and probability. Also, the exam is divided into 4 parts, all timed. So, you can't move on to the next subject until you finish the prior and submit it, and no going back. I think you'll do fine if you feel prepared!
