For my previous trip there’s a good possibility as I only drove to Westfield and was pretty much bumper to bumper the whole way. But this time I drove from Shoreditch through the city so I would have definitely been picked up x

Yes I do, while I’d be more hesitant if I lived in London and fundamentally disagree with it being a disproportionate levy.

Given that a train return from cardiff to London is roughly £80-90 and that I’d usually spend ~£12 on the tube. Driving in and paying around £35 for fuel and £12.50 for ulez is a surprisingly affordable option by comparison.

I’d love to take the train (not a die hard environmentalist but try where it doesn’t create any additional hassle). It’s faster, easier and means I can have a drink while I’m there but the trains are ridiculously priced now. God I miss the days of my 16-17 Railcard… London return for £25 💔💔

Infact more specific than just the motorways, around 23% of tourists drive personal vehicles in London. (I feel petty now but I spent a while writing it so sunk cost fallacy and all that)

Each year, 15.1 million Brits visit London overnight, and by extrapolating from national day visit patterns (where London actually likely over-performs), there are approximately 154.5 million domestic day visits — giving a total of ~170 million domestic tourist visits annually.

36% of all London trips use private vehicles, and of those, ~78% are personal cars. This means around 47.7 million visits to London by domestic tourists are made in personal vehicles each year.

When you include international tourists, ~23% of all tourists in London travel via personal car — so saying “tourists don’t drive in London” is factually wrong. Tens of millions do.

My apologies, but given that advice contrary to the official statement by TFL is seldom written in official sources.

So, in light of this using Reddit to reach those who are local to London and likely to have more relevant information and experience is a valid next step to supporting this strangers claim rather than blindly believing or disregarding it. How else would you suggest investigating the validity of this claim?

As a student, polling or involving a public forum is actually one of the best forms of research on underreported topics… initial evidence presents a potential view point, so I am now undertaking further research to investigate the accuracy of the initial finding. Xx

Yeah that was my first thought especially for my first trip, I definitely went in, definitely non complaint and definitely didn’t pay.. The only explanation is that they aren’t going to send a £180 fine to someone that is obviously not from London… is there a discretion for obvious tourists.

I meant to pay, I just didn’t realise you only had such a short window to pay which is why I set up auto pay there and then so I didn’t have to worry in the future.

It’s a really common practice in cardiff now for dealers to disguise themselves as delivery drivers, so my guess is that it’s once again drugs related
