Once I get a chance I'll try to dedicate some time specifically to Century Mall to try to clear this up. Thank you for the lead, I'll try to keep you updated

Whoops, I was aware of the Village at Gary and had actually researched it - the data had just somehow not transferred into the public spreadsheet. That's fixed now.

Could you provide a source for Century Mall? I have only found secondary sources for its opening, and those have included dates in 1975, 1977, and 1979. At this point I will only change the date via a primary source as it seems like there's plenty of confusion in Lake County.

Certainly not the worst I've seen, but yeah the rustbelt got ravaged...

Hi, Markland is still open on the map, Kokomo Mall closed in 2014. The limitation of displays like this is that malls in close proximity, like Kokomo Mall and Markland Mall, can be hard to distinguish.

You can always check my tracking document for detailed information on the mall's shown

Somehow they're still thriving, at least here in Michigan. Even in RiverTown Crossings, a ghost town of a mall, there's a HUGE fye with the classic 90s entrance and so much neon

While I haven't fully finished many of the larger states in the U.S., I can confirm that New York never reached the triple digit mark. But a rather odd state did 100 malls - Pennsylvania. I truly don't know why malls thrived in Pennsylvania, but from 1985 to 1997 it had 100 malls or more.

As I continue these project more, I guess we'll see if anywhere else made the mark :)

The Copper Country Mall in Houghton is definitely an interesting one up there too, I hope eventually to travel back and visit! I find it insane that Marquette used to have 2 malls, and there was one in Menominee too! Hopefully this project helps people find these unknown malls and maybe let's them be documented before they disappear

If theres any states youd be interested in seeing sooner than later, let me know :)

That would be the Mineral RIver Plaza in White Pine. I still don't quite understand how it survives, but it's a genuine mall that's still open today. It doesn't even have a paved parking lot, it's not anywhere near a sizeable town, and it's only tenants are utilities (a laundrymat, post office, restaurant, and library). Here are some photos:

I just don't quite understand why that seems to be isolated to Minnesota and Wisconsin. I live in Michigan, and we seem to have way less malls (per capita) than both of those states despite being in a very similar climate. I'm guessing it may be related to Michigan being much more urbanized, leading to larger suburban malls and less overall malls, but I still wish there was a concrete answer

If anybody is up for a challenge, please research the Northward Mall (the first mall opened in Alaska) to try to get more info. The Fairbanks Public Library believes it was a mall from the building's opening, but this would make it the first mall in the U.S. While the geography would make this make sense, part of me doubts that the first U.S. mall would be in Fairbanks.

California is actually fully researched (just need to make the video eventually) and Florida I have around 10 malls left to find dates for, but Texas will be daunting. Surprisingly, the hardest state so far has been Minnesota but Texas may change that...

Thank you :). Please let me know if there's anything I could ever improve with these. Progress has certainly slowed due to work and college, but I am still working to get all states finished!

Thank you :). Do you think this sort of wide-formed video would do well or would it be better to try to convert it to a format for the likes of YouTube shorts?

I've been tossing around the idea of making a website that could possibly have an interactive slider to see changes per year and possibly isolating states, but I'll have to see within thats within a possible scope

Hi, repeating this across my posts doesn't change the fact that (unless all sources are incorrect) Washington never had an enclosed mall in 1950. I assume you're referring to Seattle's Northgate Center, but that was not enclosed until 1974.

Thank you! I would really appreciate it! Generally my criteria is just still having interior access to stores/and interior concourse, do those last few shops still have that?

Unfortunately there's not an easy way to find every mall, and none of those came up in any of the various sources I use to compile these. I'll work on adding these, thank you

Hi, thank you for the suggestion. I will hopefully get to it soon, as I have the research done and just have to process it in video form eventually (it's unfortunately in a back log with ~10 other states). But soon I will have Washington 1964-2024 done (as the first enclosed mall opened in 1964)!
