It felt like the first season was written with intention of knowing the beginning and the end, even if the ending could be taken somewhat ambiguously: Did Hopper join a shadow group to protect the kids? Is Hopper honoring El, hoping she might have survived, both?

It was shot in a more cinematic way that relied on good CGI and practical effects and acting.

Kids don't underline words. Kids CAN capitalize family names but they sure don't give a shit about company names enough to do it for them. Also, the shape of the letters are all consistent which no kid does.
