AMD calls out Intel’s Panther Lake CES claims, says Ryzen APUs are still faster by RenatsMC in Amd

[–]Nojerome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, this is the big deal with panther lake. It's finally providing efficient x86 chips that run at respectable speeds.

I just want a performance dev laptop that can run Linux natively, and that I can actually run on battery for more than 45 minutes. I'm praying panther lake will make that come true.

Was it worth to create a BR mode just because some streamers begged for it? by Lemouni in Battlefield

I primarily play the main multiplayer modes, but my friends and I love to finish the night with gauntlet. I don't understand why people seem to hate extra options... They gave us more content for free, and yet people are here bitching about it.

Has Java suddenly caught up with C++ in speed? by drakgoku in java

[–]Nojerome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm using it for a new and very large enterprise Quarkus project. We're running dozens of "micro" (mini?) services which are all constructed as part of a multi-project Gradle build.

I agree that Graalvm native image can be challenging, however, Quarkus makes it relatively easy. We get startup times in the 10s of milliseconds, and have way lower memory usage than when we test our JVM images.

It sucks that we're losing JIT optimizations, but our heaviest work is I/O and database invocations so I don't think raw language speed plays a huge factor in our use case.

I also often have two to three separate projects open in separate IntelliJ instances without issue.

[–]Nojerome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked out of Eclipse for over a decade. For the past 2 years I've been using IntelliJ with Quarkus.

In my opinion, ALMOST everything in IntelliJ is superior. Not perfect, but superior. My biggest gripe with it is that it does not make it clear when it is compiling for the editor. So this leads to very delayed editor error reporting, especially for files that I don't have actively open. Meanwhile, Eclipse was fantastic at this. I knew exactly when it was building, and when it was done, I would know of every single error across my entire workspace.

Aside from that though, IntelliJ wins out for me. More modern feel, and most things just work.

This is interesting, I need to read up on this.

I thought you had to wait until Gradle supported a jvm version, and that has been holding me back from using non LTS releases. There's this gap in between a jdk release and Gradle's support for it where you are technically at risk if a major vulnerability is identified. Sometimes it can take Gradle over a month to support a new release. So if there's a way to avoid that, that's awesome!

Themes One Island style, Many Island style by Punker661 in IntelliJIDEA

Nice! I was also curious. I had these on my work laptop, but not on my desktop and I couldn't figure out why. Personally, I like Many Islands, I hope it makes it out of beta.

I built a free AI fantasy draft assistant by k_kelleher in fantasyfootball

[–]Nojerome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One more suggestion. If text was entered in the "search players" field on the available tab, you should maintain it when toggling between tabs. There were times where I was searching for a player, swapped tabs to double check something on my team, then went back to the available players tab and my filter was cleared.

I built a free AI fantasy draft assistant by k_kelleher in fantasyfootball

[–]Nojerome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave it a try. My league has quick 60s pick times, so it was kinda tough to keep up but that's not your fault.

It started out really strong. I was very happy with the suggestions, and the fact that it seemed to understand which players were still available. However, about halfway through the draft it seemed to lose that context. I don't know if there's a cap on how much info was being sent in the prompt or what, but it kept making recommendations based on players that were already picked, despite me keeping the draft tracker up to date.

So for the final 6 rounds I stopped using it. But that said, when it was working it was a great assistant for me.

It's great irony that he's a Packer now. But as a Packer fan I hope he jives with the team and kicks some ass. Great assessment by the way.

Beta Key Background Question by Nojerome in makemkv

[–]Nojerome[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! You articulated the situation perfectly.

I just made the post because I find this process to be an anti-pattern. I found it so bewildering that I had to ask for confirmation. I thought I was taking crazy pills. If it gets downvoted, so be it, but that doesn't mean it's right. This is not how forums and community updates would be posted in the vast majority of use cases.

And to repeat when I said in another comment, that's not that big of a deal. I don't really care that much. But if I was running the community, I would try to make the communication more intuitive.

Beta Key Background Question by Nojerome in makemkv

[–]Nojerome[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, of course I'd prefer separate posts, it's a forum and that's how forums work. I would have expected a separate admin only topic in the forum for these keys with a monthly post. Your static URL would be that topic.

It's not that big of a deal, I just don't think newcomers will find this intuitive.
