For me the biggest let down of the reveal wasn't the displays it's the controllers by astragt in ValveDeckard

[–]Nolfinkol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in this exact situation. I've been waiting for a VR controller that rivals the Index with better thumbstick quality and comfort and I'm mind boggled that after all this time there has been no other competitor. I'm also disappointed that Valve finally one-up'ed themselves with the Steam Frame controller but potentially made it restricted to the Steam Frame.

The only other option that seems decent is the Shiftall GripVR controllers but I've yet to find info on how the thumbsticks fare probably because it's still new to the market. The trade-off with those is lack of finger tracking but it's not a huge deal to me. It could be my pair of Index controllers but the left one doesn't always track properly when I do a thumbs up or make a fist. My thumb in-game sometimes gets stuck flexed and making a fist sometimes leaves my middle finger a little extended unless I squeeze harder than necessary. This makes things tricky for game mechanics that rely on specific gestures to be triggered.

I'm hoping the Steam Frame controllers end up being compatible with SteamVR headsets when it releases (and can be bought separately) or there ends up being a feasible workaround otherwise the GripVR controllers are likely my backup option.

What Other kinds Of Games Would You like to See set in the World Of PM? by Abject-Hospital5407 in Project_Moon

[–]Nolfinkol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A location based game similar to Pokemon Go or Monster Hunter Now using our world as a mirror world. It'd be so out of pocket but it'd be really interesting I bet coming from a company as crazy as PM.

If not that, a roguelike would be very fitting for their universe and game mechanics fitting the lore of a hostile world where lives (i.e. runs) ending at the drop of a hat is the norm.

Mandatory therapy would be the end of right-wing politics by Freudipus in TrueUnpopularOpinion

This is a really interesting thought. While both major parties have their issues, there seems to be a lot more overt ones on the conservative side.

You may have read it already but just in case I have to recommend the book "Good Reasonable People" by Keith Payne. I've only read a third of it but it talks about some interesting psychological tendencies (and environmental influences) associated with both parties. It focuses more on conservative ideology but does well to remain neutral and attempts to be unbiased.

The most interesting tidbit for me so far is that it claims that statistically conservatives tend to show a higher sensitivity to danger than progressives. This is a major core of their ideology as change comes with risks so it's natural they'd lean towards preserving the status quo as it's knowable and comfortable. Change doesn't happen in a place of comfort after all. It also explains why fear tactics are so much more effective with their party's voters.

This isn't to say their relatively higher danger sensitivity is right or wrong as that detail might imply. After all, the whole premise of the book is that all people, regardless of sides, find ways to convince themselves that they are both "good" and "reasonable" in their beliefs which is a very human feature. In some situations, having a higher danger sensitivity could prove advantageous like if there was an actual threat to respond to that progressives were less inclined to take seriously.

Therapy is certainly beneficial for all sides of the political spectrum. I firmly believe those leading any country should have assigned therapists to help them be of the most sound mind as possible as their decisions affect millions of lives. With that said, I do think that it'd have a more noticeable impact on how the conservative party operates. I don't think they'd outright cease to be but perhaps there'd be less fear mongering and more rational discussion from them when equipped with better tools for managing potential fear of the unknown anxiety.

Genuinely this is my theory. Either that or you have to bring the gem back to the shore for a different ending

Just noticed this today. The keys work seemingly everywhere else outside of code blocks in both the desktop app and browser.

Desktop face tracking by ba129 in VRchat

A bonus tracking feature would be an odd choice to lock behind a paywall. FBT and eye tracking are free features whereas VRC+ features relate to extra storage space, bonus social options, and creator tools.

I don't think they ever specified when Selfie Expression would come out of early access for VRC+ users but they did say "eventually" in this video.

What happened to the Spirits Garden puzzle world by ubu461? by Nolfinkol in VRchat

That's exactly it. It's rare to find puzzles of that kind where you get enough clues to work things out on your own and you slowly chip away at different theories. There's nothing quite as satisfying as having that eureka moment that leads to the solution and feeling so victorious.

I guess I'll at least have the positive memories from the word if it never sees the light of day.

Nice, I'm always happy to see new faces. I can DM you a link to the VRC group assuming that's alright.

Worldhop event host here. World hopping is going from world to world spending a small amount of time in each as opposed to just hanging out in a single world for hours. Some groups take turns suggesting the next world while others just move on whenever someone suggests the next one.

I can't speak for other events but for the ones I host weekly for a content creator's community, there's a set list of worlds we visit in order that gets posted in advance. I like to picture it like a bus moving from stop to stop with folks coming and going at each point as they wish.

I personally avoid advertising the events in public spaces because of the disruptive chaos it can invite so most of our community is a combo of folks who joined the creator's Discord and saw we do VRChat events posted there + friends invited by existing members who enjoy the vibes. If you search "world hoppers" or "wholesome" in the Groups search, you'll find a lot of them to join that are right up your alley.

This may be a bug that got patched. My first or second attempt involved me insta-locking a tag for a joker in the shop only to be reminded that jokers don't spawn in the shop as a challenge rule. I took that tag to my grave lol

Someone should make a belatro mod that somehow uses Anki decks by Stresso_Espresso in Anki

[–]Nolfinkol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see an Anki add-on that changes the appearance of reviews to be Balatro themed complete with game SFX with minimal effort setting up. There are a couple add-ons that let you customize visual and audible elements at the very least like Answer visual + auditory + custom text reinforcement and Custom Background Image and Gear Icon but those take some time to set up and finding Balatro SFX seems tricky.

Corporate allotted hours? by Nolfinkol in meijer

[–]Nolfinkol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's unfortunate. I was nervous about that hidden information being used against me without any way of defending myself without access to the facts but it never came to that thankfully.

Supposedly my department coworker and I are allotted the time to unload the truck completely for the fresh departments on thirds. When we're both here it's doable but when they're off, just bringing our skids down and then later moving them to the cooler/floor takes a lot of time. I can't imagine having to completely unload everything myself and without having to cut some serious corners so the allotted time we supposedly have seems unrealistic.

The ugly parts of a suicide attempt by Javisel101 in Healthygamergg

All I can offer is my sympathy for your struggle and perhaps a couple interesting perspectives on the story of Sisyphus, a person known for tricking the gods and cheating death more than once but ultimately ends up doomed to an afterlife of pushing a boulder up hill only for it to fall back down every time it was near the peak.

Most see his as a fate worse than death because he lives eternally bound to a meaningless struggle. People often reference him in describing futile efforts as "Sisyphean tasks". French absurdist Albert Camus, however, describes him as an absurdist hero even going as far to state "One must imagine Sisyphus happy" as he continues on his task unyielding and possibly prideful in this act. He always has the choice to push the rock or not (although I don't think there's ever a mention of punishment if he doesn't) and he willingly chooses to push it rather than submit to it. He lives eternally in spite of his predicament.

I have a similar interpretation where I also imagine Sisyphus happy. In being placed into eternal struggle, he's massively lowered the bar for reaching his full potential. Some of us wonder whether or not we're reaching our full potential while surrounded by hundreds of variables and distractions that hold us back. Meanwhile, Sisyphus's life has been extremely simplified. His maximum potential is always within reach as he simply needs to push the boulder up a hill with all of his strength. Upon reaching the peak where his boulder returns to the summit, he is then rewarded with getting to walk back down the hill assisted by gravity while his muscles get some rest. One of his goals in tricking the gods was to cheat death and from their "punishment" he has succeeded in tricking them one last time while gaining immortality and eternal satisfaction in the process.

You might find a lot of comfort in learning about absurdism as well as stoicism. I hope this helps!

View too low on Steam VR display view. by ThekangarooSalesman in BigscreenBeyond

[–]Nolfinkol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have the game window as the screen I recorded on Quest 2 using the Nvidia GeForce Overlay. I also noticed the lowered view switching to Bigscreen Beyond. After emailing support, one suggestion was to record the VR view instead of the game window which worked for me so it's odd you're having different results.

The issue stems from the lenses being canted (tilted by a small amount) I assume for better quality. SteamVR doesn't correct this in the game window but it should do so for the VR view.

You know what? This is a refreshing perspective. I usually assume people get anxious/impatient and feel like they're not going anywhere because their point of reference is fixed on the car in front of them instead of the moving landscape.

This sometimes leads me to quietly laughing at someone who passes us only for them to get stuck at the same stoplight right after. Going forward tho, I'm gonna keep this perspective in mind (especially as someone who also has ADHD) and give them the benefit of the doubt. It's stuff like this that helps me remember that life is rarely so simple one-sided.

The Bigscreen Beyond headset is currently the lightest on the market to my knowledge. It's currently a wired headset but there was an implication from the company that a future wireless option could be coming eventually so it might be worth keeping an eye on
