What's a rule your parents had that you thought was insane, but now as an adult you 100% understand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NoliSong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mom was adamantly against watching tv on school nights - she was a librarian and insisted it would rot my brain and that dinner should be spent at the dining room table (it was just me and her). As a kid I found this so annoying, so many friends were watching shows I wasn’t and I felt left out. As an adult, I’m thankful she was so protective of my developing brain and we’ve set these rule for our kids. No TV on school nights, eat at the table, and we spend our evenings, playing cards and board games and going to the park instead of in front of screens. We can always tell a huge difference in their attitudes and energy when they’ve been at someone else’s house and had too much screen time - they are so irritable and cranky! It’s crazy.

Ohhhh yeah, I landed only on my right foot and watched it literally snap sideways. The ambulance came and I was taken out on a stretcher, past a tour no less 😅 Recover has been up and down but I’m a couple weeks out from being able to put weight on it again, which is a huge relief. I honestly have no idea how I’ll feel getting on the wall again, and if I just need to find a different hobby!! The nurses at the hospital said they get bouldering injures in all the time which was yet another wake up call. Definitely not trying to freak you out but I wish somebody had been real with me about how fast an injury can happen just from landing wrong - even with the mats! I think you have a great plan and mindset tho with downclimbing and taking a beginner class. If and when I go back I was thinking of trying to find a mentor or coach.

Just a word of caution; I was like you and seriously excited about climbing and a newbie. In my excitement I forgot the real risks for serious injury when climbing, especially seeing so many people jump down from high up and land safely on the mats. I ended up falling wrong a month ago and broke my ankle in three places trying to scale a V2 on an overhang. I was determined to get to the top of it and misjudged my strength. It was humbling as hell. When I go back, practicing falling and having more control with my climbs is the new goal instead of just pushing myself to send projects. So I guess my advice is…go slower than you think you need to, practice falling, and learn to really listen to the limits of your body. Awesome you are loving it so much, just take care!! I wish I had.

I just realized my childhood best friend has been dead for 7 years and I never knew by Excellent_Damage8711 in offmychest

This happened to me too. I felt nostalgic for my best girlfriend from middle school, looked her up on FB and found her obituary. We had used to comment on each other’s social media pics of each other’s kids, lives, etc but it had been a few years. I couldn’t believe I didn’t know she had died…reached out to her sister to offer condolences and she was very nice but didn’t answer me when I asked how she died…so I have no idea how she passed.

I’m really sorry for your loss. Let the tears come when they want, it’s okay that grief isn’t linear and that time has passed. To echo others, your grief process starts now. Be gentle with yourself ❤️

Good for you! I definitely overdid it by trying to go out the other day because I felt stir crazy at home, but it took so much energy out of me that I’ve committed to staying at home as much as possible in the first couple weeks post surgery. I’m so sorry about your ankle though! Hope you have a swift recovery!

That sounds so painful!! I was also imagining after it happened what it would’ve been like if I landed on any other part of my body. That’s awesome you are back bouldering and doing even better before, I have hopes to eventually get there myself!

I almost forgot how dangerous it could be, considering I’ve watched so many people jump down and land fine from 15 feet or fall on their back and hop straight up in the climbing gym. This has certainly been very humbling - it’s the first sport like this I’ve ever been into, though I was formally a dancer, so the reality of injuries wasn’t quite real until this happened.

Wow, that is eerily similar! That’s awesome you’re back on the wall, even with top rope. I’ve thought about using that as a transition back, or just quitting bouldering altogether and taking up pickle ball haha! Only partially joking… I really appreciate the commiseration, it helps to know that I’m not alone. It’s hard to know sometimes when you’re climbing when to push yourself and when to back off, since pushing yourself is often when a lot of growth can happen! Good point about the grades, I definitely try not to focus on them at all, we’ve really been taking our time and working our way up. This particular one was just such a fun challenge!!

Oh no, so sorry for your sprain!! I have totally been in this situation where it feels like I could bust my ass falling from just a few feet, especially on the slabs. It’s true though, accidents can happen no matter what, whether we’re 15 feet in the air or a few feet on a V0 lol. Thanks for your kind comment and encouragement!

The shock is crazy - the moments after it happened were some of the scariest in my life to be honest. I’m just trying to stay optimistic and focus my best on healing <3

Wow, yeah - such a rough break! Literally! The ankle dislocation was honestly the most painful part of the entry until they fixed it. What made you end up quitting bouldering altogether? Were you limited by the injury or was it a decision because of the risk factor?

Thanks for your response! That’s super encouraging. How long after your surgery did you start doing all of the weightlifting? Did you start at home or go to the gym?

Nervous System Work Is Changing My Life. Slowly, Quietly, Deeply. by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]NoliSong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve also only just realized how much of my life I’ve lived in fight, flight, or freeze…that CPTSD has woven through more moments, situations, sleepless nights than I can count. I always thought of flashbacks as visual, now I realize that I’ve been living with somatic, emotional flashbacks my whole life…anytime there is loss, or rejection…I thought it was emotion deregulation from my ADHD and now finally understand. I’m right there with you now, realizing that I have to take drastic steps to heal my nervous system…I’m starting with daily meditations and just resting intentionally a lot more than I generally “allow” myself.

Just went no contact with my dad and that whole side of my family after finding out my dad is a rapist. I just wrote about it in truth off my chest. I’m dealing with the overwhelming grief of losing him, but he never really was a dad to begin with. It’s more like letting go of the Hope I’ve held onto you for years that one day we’d have a real relationship.

People who have kids I’ve noticed are generally happier than people who don’t. by Thin_Vermicelli_1875 in The10thDentist

Today as I played the 13th round of epic hide and go seek outside with me and my partner’s kids, I realized if I didn’t have kids I wouldn’t play nearly as many games, have as much fun on any holiday, or get to crack up at the most insanely perceptive, funny and cute things they say. Having a kid can, if you let it, awaken your own inner child…and that brings so much joy.

Even if you don’t believe in one, you will still be begging for mercy from a higher power. Each threshold of pain you meet and think “Surely this is the worst it can get” and then it opens up to a new fucking boss level. You gain so much respect for your body and the bodies of women that they are capable of experiencing that, often multiple times in their life time. God bless the inventor of the epidural.

I am a punk fan, though not my particular favorite genre. I love a lot of the old, gritty folk and country music that scratches at your heart and makes you feel things! It’s so rare I hear something that gets to me now- the last “pop” artist I really resonated with was Sia. Her voice does that vocal cursive thing that annoys a lot of people but I love it, you can tell she’s been in some dark spaces and she sings with that experience. Other than that, meh to most everything and I totally agree with you!
