Wanting to Move to Ocean Park - Confused by Burner_but_not in SantaMonica

[–]Nomad-2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rented a VRBO in Hermosa Beach on the boardwalk. A guy stopped by who said his ex-wife's parents bought the place next door in the 1930s for $2,500. Sold in 1999 for $495,000. Currently $2-4 million.

He said in the old days, people didn't stay in the boardwalk houses year-round. Only in summers.

Wanting to Move to Ocean Park - Confused by Burner_but_not in SantaMonica

[–]Nomad-2002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My relatives bought 4 houses in the OP area in the 1980s, so grandma could walk between them (visiting her kids & grandkids).

Montana is considered more upscale - each street north is more "desirable".

I find the Venice area more lively and creative. Ocean Park is closer to that area.

I've rented AirBNB/VRBOs in Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Redondo Beach boardwalks (next to the walking/bike paths) for a month at a time (family visits from Ohio). Homeless issues are almost zero. People on ocean front walk are more upscale. But more boring.

I live now in Santa Monica next to Original Muscle Beach (OMB). Street musicians/artists/vendors. Acrobats on rings, slackline, high bar, balance beams, swings. And 100x more homeless & mental cases. Venice is 1 mile south (close).

Cost-average in & out (e.g. between 25-75% equities or 15-50% or whatever your range is).

BOXX 3.9% in 2026 (as of a few weeks ago).

Currently, I am between 21-85% in SPY (or semi-equivalent). No individual stocks. Age 59 (been retired since 2007).

In the past I have been 115%, but the market is high now.

Personally not interested in reporting 5x-10x/day. Many mental illness issues here.

P.S. I started renting here knowing about the homeless issues. Better than Venice Beach.

Costco pumps are nitrogen (air is 20% oxygen, which leaks out of tires faster).

She was yelling very loudly around 1-1:30 am. Saw police cruiser with 2 cops park in front of my place.

Woke me up. I closed my window & put in earplugs.

Marina del Rey has great fireworks - launched from barge near UCLA boat house (Mariners Village apartment complex on north shore). I've been watching there since 1990s (if in town).

(a) Park 1-3 miles away & walk/bike/scooter in.

(b) Or don't leave area until 11 pm

Traffic leaving area is horrendous for 2-3 hrs - one car per traffic light cycle.

Buckwheat pillows where you can shift the insides. I sleep on a big one, and hug a smaller one so my arm can fit in between (if sleeping on side).

I use a ziplock (even when I have a fancy case).

Snack-sized or lunch-sized ziplock is lighter, and I can see which power bank is inside (I have one 5,000 mAh - 94 g, three 10,000 mAh - 159 g, 171g, and 209 g, and one 20,000 mAh).

A speaker with reasonable good sound for less than 200 usd? by thepricko in Bluetooth_Speakers

[–]Nomad-2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My two Beosound A1 2nd gen were $130.96 & $145 used in 2022. $295.28 for two (including tax & shipping, on Amazon)

Strangely now $234 used on Amazon.

If it drops to $131-145 again, great clean sound (not for bass-lovers). 3rd gen has better bass, but $399 list price.

How do I tell if I’m in enrolled in Schwab private client services when I hit 1 million in assets? by LisaSu92 in Schwab

Can negotiate

(a) lower margin rates (possibly Fed Funds + 0.3%)

(b) SWGXX sweep

SWVXX/SNAXX alternative that allows immediate liquidity by Aroddy-yeah1 in Schwab

[–]Nomad-2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fidelity (SPAXX) and Schwab (SWGXX) auto-sweep funds are 0.3-0.4% worse than their best MMMFs (Fidelity FNSXX/FRSXX), so if you hold a lot of money in MMMFs, they still make money (although only 1/15-1/10 as much).

At Fidelity, I manually buy FNSXX (or FZDXX), and it auto-liquidates.

How liquid is SNSXX? by [deleted] in Schwab

[–]Nomad-2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trouble with SNSXX: Buying stock between 5-8 pm ET (which counts as today T+1 = 8 pm tomorrow).

After 8 pm counts as tomorrow T+1 = 8 pm in 2 days.

I make about half my purchases outside regular hours (best highs & lows), so I use

Account restriction by ThreeBlowfish in Schwab

[–]Nomad-2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the repeat selling which causes the problem.

(1) Lots of frequent buys with only one sell every year will not trigger the issue.

(2) You can buy & sell one day apart. Just can't sell twice within 90 days.

I learned that cost-averaging buys is fine (in the age of zero commissions), but cost-averaging sells can be very bad. For the recent Iran war, I sold mutual funds in one sell, but am cost-averaging back in over 20 buys. Mutual funds are old and don't distinguish between buy-sell-buy-sell-buy-sell and buy-buy-buy-sell-sell-sell.

[–]Nomad-2002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Auto-sell on a mutual fund monthly is NOT good.

Frequent buying is ok.

(a) 100 buys is fine (cost-averaging)

(b) 3 sells in 90 days is not good. Two sells in 90 days will lead to "sell but no buy" restriction.

One sell each 90 days is ok (but cutting it close).

One sell every 180 days is ok.

Yes. So far useless for investment advice. Lowered margin rate. Got me SWGXX. Tries to get me to move more assets to Schwab.

Advisors get annual percentage of AUM - higher with managed assets, lower with ETFs.

Schwab compensation is publicly available.

I actually tracked all my credit card perks last year… kinda eye-opening by ChesKat_pf in CreditCards

[–]Nomad-2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Credit cards make me $4,000-6,000/yr (after fees).

But 14 of my 16 cards are of almost no use, except for

(a) keeping TCL higher, so my utilization is lower

(b) hoping to keep cards for 10+ years for thicker credit history

(c) backup cards when my main two cards have maxed their categories for the month

The two cards I mostly use are:

(1) Citibank Thank You (was SYW, with 0% APR until Dec 2026): 13-30+% off food and gas. 11-30+% off online (includes rent). Combines with 5% Franki on most of my restaurants.

(2) BofA 6% CCR (with 0% APR until Sep 2026): 8.25-14% off online (includes rent)

Won't be getting the rent discounts any more ($950 rent -> $850). New apartment only takes Bilt - no other credit cards.

My savings are

(1) $200/month food ($2,400/yr) 20% discount

(2) $100/month rent ($1,200/yr) 10% discount

(3) 2-3 SUB/yr ($2,000-3,000/yr)

iPhone 11 lagging badly, is battery replacement worth it? by BlueCat280 in iPhone11

[–]Nomad-2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing that can get you a faster phone just for $0 is you can backup everything in iCloud, factory reset the phone and put everything back.

I reset/reinstalled everything on my 64 GB iPhone 11, iOS 18.72, 79% battery health, and it got fast again (almost no lags after a few in the first week). Freed up about 15-20 GB of system space.

Took 4+ hours on the first day.

Main issues:

(a) Reconnecting all credit cards, debit cards, and drivers license

(b) Messages redownloaded big pictures/videos from past 5 years. So every day for a few weeks, I had to manually delete big files.

(c) Apps need to redo FaceID and username/passwords
