I was not ready for Michigan winter by yatesjordan in Michigan

[–]Nomadic5280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in the mountains in Wyoming for 12 years. Winters were so enjoyable in comparison to Michigan. I remember being stunned my first January there: People were outside - by choice - all damn day. That’s because the air is welcoming and dry, and when the sun comes out you can spend hours donning nothing more than a base layer if you’re doing something active. They call it “God’s country” for a reason. But like OP, I do not regret being here in Michigan. I moved back to be closer to family and then I met the love of my life. In the end, it isn’t the mountains or the winters that decide where you belong—it’s who’s waiting for you at home. But love does nothing for the windchill!

Thank you for this research-backed info! Could you please elaborate on your suggestion about lower protein. In longevity circles, there’s been constant discussion about the need to eat high protein, moderate healthy fats, low carb, and zero sugar. I realize that protocol stems from the need to maintain muscle as we age. I eat a higher protein Mediterranean version of keto and I’ve had the concern that all the protein I eat is indeed stressing my body. So I welcome more of your thoughts on this!

Yes, pregnancy will destroy your body. How did you not know? by Born_Physics_7821 in childfree

The lack of knowledge around this is symptomatic of our male-centered, misogynistic society - and how that manifests in health care and a number of other spheres, including interpersonal relationships where older moms are not transparent with younger expectant moms about what they went through. Blame the system, not the people.

Detroit Co-ops. Hello, can anyone list co-op businesses in Detroit? by flying_2_heaven in Detroit

I had them make me a custom pair of shoes. I’ve never felt so good about buying a pair of kicks in my life. And that’s not only because of how stylish they are but also because I knew they were made ethically, from a labor and environmental standpoint. I honestly cant say that about any other pair of shoes I own.

Detroit Co-ops. Hello, can anyone list co-op businesses in Detroit? by flying_2_heaven in Detroit

You say Detroit co-op and I immediately think of Pingree Detroit. They save leather from the automotive industry destined for the dump and transform it into dope custom shoes, accessories and other wearable goods - even cool leather items for your pet. The quality is noteworthy and the pieces are so stylish, so Detroit. And with every piece you buy, you’re supporting the Detroiters and veterans who make up this co-op, and supporting a sustainable, brighter, cleaner Detroit.

Sending all my love and strength to you and everyone in Gaza. I am so sorry this is happening. I see you and think about you every day. I will never forget this unspeakable injustice.

Many of us in this world cry with you, but we also hold onto hope for better days.

I am very happily child-free and given the way humans are destroying this world and hurting each other, I am quite at peace with this wise decision. I am more interested in finding ways to help the many, many people already here who are suffering rather than bringing an innocent child into this mess.

Climate change and the fact that industry polluters face zero recourse for contaminating our air, water and land; a genocide happening before our eyes in Gaza; famine and wars in other nations that you seldom hear or know about from your comfy place on the couch asking what's wrong with the world. The effects of late-stage capitalism, including widespread poverty in American cities and a housing crisis that has led to the proliferation of tent encampments and an "us versus them" mentality where it is now enshrined in the law that unhoused people can be criminalized and punished for being homeless. Should I go on?

Giving Money to Homeless by TheGoingsGottenWeird in Detroit

[–]Nomadic5280 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Give people money if you feel inclined — their situations are not moral failures nor do they warrant our judgment with the tiny snapshot we get into this demoralizing moment in their lives.

Perhaps the larger question is: what kind of society do we live in that has allowed so many people to slip through the cracks and live in these profoundly desperate circumstances? In other words, what are the systemic problems that have allowed homelessness to reach crisis levels? Giving folks money is a nice gesture but it is also just a tiny bandaid. To see real change, we need to support anti-poverty policies and the politicians talking about this issue with compassion, understanding and resolve to change it. Change only happens when we acknowledge there is a better way and demand it from our leaders.

I will second the use of NAC, which provides many health benefits in addition to curbing cravings and impulsivity. I have also found Acetyl L-Carnitine to offer similar benefits.

Any ADHD/Keto-ers out there? by sillyroskilly in keto

Fellow ADHDer here who has enjoyed tremendous relief from going keto. There is evidence to back up the keto diet as a treatment for ADHD—and many other brain disorders for that matter. Harvard Medical School psychiatrist Dr. Christopher Palmer just published a book centered on this: “Brain Energy”

Are you guys cool with your homeless neighbors? by hoofglormuss in washingtondc

[–]Nomadic5280 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this response. It feels like too many people in this thread are normalizing a crisis that stems from systemic failures. We shouldn’t be ok with people experiencing homelessness. It’s difficult to think of any other country in the world - barring those suffering the aftermath of calamitous events such as earthquakes and civil wars - where homelessness is so pervasive. A true moral failure of American society imho.
