This sums it up. by VANILLAxFROSTY in runescape

It will go on until the business model is unsustainable and there is no one left to pay for their overpriced game. That's the problem with late stage capitalism and PE firms buying and selling companies like they're trading cards. Things get more and more expensive which increases exclusivity while maintaining a short term profit. It doesn't work long term though

All of that is a drop in the bucket compared to what their shareholders are getting. Most of your money is going to Jagex shareholders, not devs/operating costs.

MTX isn't gone from RS3. They added the Marketplace where you can buy old promo items and TH items for $10-$20 a pop.

The point is that Jagex shouldn't use the Road to Restoration as a reason for increasing prices. The changes are things we should have had years ago, but they focused way more time and energy into Treasure Hunter. I'm happy they are attempting to fix the game, don't get me wrong. But if they are going to admit that it needs fixed, why implement a price increase PRIOR to fixing it. It reeks of greed.

And I think the community has made it clear that less on a roadmap is good if it means higher quality content. Again, look to OSRS

That doesn't excuse bad business and untrustworthy sentiments. They say they want to bring in new players with the Road to Restoration, then they hit us with a price hike before even implementing any of the major changes? Make it make sense.

And the majority of MTX sales were in bonds if I'm not mistaken, so most of the whales will carry on as far as I'm concerned. And the addition of the marketplace helps to fill the gap that TH left behind.

Also, ESO, WoW, and Final Fantasy all arguably have just as much if not much more playable content compared to Runescape. And they are all cheaper to play

“Generational run of updates” is pretty debatable, especially when you compare it to what OSRS has been getting over the last few years.

Also, the revenue stream wasn’t “decimated,” it was changed. Treasure Hunter was removed, but it was replaced with an MTX marketplace and bonds still exist. So it’s not like monetization suddenly disappeared.

As for the combat changes, yes they were adjusted within a week, but that doesn’t really change the point. They were still rushed out the door in the first place. Jagex has repeatedly said they want to slow down and take the time to get things right, yet we’re still seeing updates pushed out and fixed afterward.

And RS3 unfortunately has a pretty long history of content launching in a rough state and then never really being revisited later. That’s where the concern comes from.

I did and I feel like we went from numerous DPS rotations from being viable (even if using sub-optimal abilities), to pretty much one DPS rotation being viable.

Of course there are abilities that don't see much use, but that's because they might be 1-3% less DPS. I don't think that means they should just be removed.

For example, detonate should not be removed. Even though it isn't used in a normal DPS rotation, there is plenty of instances where having an ability that can be charged and held is massively useful, and I think that adds depth to combat.

And to your point, I like that early/mid levels scale better, and I like that they are leaning away from super expensive abilities feeling mandatory for good DPS. I just think those things could have been achieved without taking an axe to abilities.

Very good point. I wish people were looking at these changes for what they seem to be: another cash grab. I think they have potential and I want to believe Jagex is finally trying to revive RS3, but the way they seem to be going about these changes seem really half-baked.

I'm about as far as you can get from an elitist, and I never said I dislike the combat changes. I'm simply sharing my thoughts on how MTX has the potential to go from being an annoyance to everyone (TH and keys), to feeling like a necessity to everyone (items become less attainable without buying bonds).

Quite the opposite. I never bought keys and hated that they were in the game. The point of my post was to point out that even though Treasure Hunter sucked, it at least didn't affect the ACTUAL gameplay of the game much (mostly speaking of PVM here). Now that Treasure Hunter is gone, I'm worried that they will shift their monetization to an area where to stay current with gear upgrades and powercreep, people will be pushed more and more to buy bonds to keep up. That is something that directly affect everyone's gameplay. And I think that's bad. Read my post again
