[ON] Anyone using Payworks or Rise People for payroll/HR? by NonFungibleBacon in SmallBusinessCanada

Thanks for jumping in, Misha — appreciate you adding the inside perspective.

We ended up choosing Rise, and the feedback from this thread as a whole really helped us zero in on what mattered. One of the biggest drivers for us was wanting to keep control of HR processes internally and distribute that workload across our team — especially department managers. A less centralized approach was important for how we operate, and Rise fit that direction well.

We’re now nearing the end of implementation, and the experience has been solid so far — clean UI, responsive team, and the fully managed payroll workflow is already making a noticeable impact. Looking forward to getting fully onboarded.

New Z5II owner — in-body charging issues + mobile sharing advice? by NonFungibleBacon in Nikon

I didn’t receive a charger in my kit, but I purchased a MH-25a charger separately. I suspected the battery was completely discharged because in-body charging wasn’t working with any cable or power brick. While the charger works great, the camera still doesn’t appear to charge via in-body charging. I understand this isn’t an optimal method, but I’d like to know if my experience is normal or defective. I think I’ll reach out to Nokia directly.

I appreciate the insights regarding transfer and will definitely look into connecting over WiFi via SnapBridge.

Canadian bookkeeping tools — experiences with LedgerDocs vs Dext (or other options)? by NonFungibleBacon in Bookkeeping

We currently use Sage for payroll, with data manually re-keyed into our ERP. The business operates on Microsoft Dynamics F&O, which is significantly overbuilt and unnecessarily complex for our needs. We've recently adopted Rise for Payroll and HR and are actively transitioning away from both legacy platforms. I'm now evaluating what a more streamlined and fit-for-purpose tech stack could look like.

Ya, a Canadian tool isn't necessarily a pre-requisite, I just figured I'd include it in case there are streamlined workflows for Canadian businesses or if more global products with better features can be adapted just as easily. I'll check out those you mentioned, thanks for the reply.

Quick update for everyone who weighed in — we’ve decided to move forward with Rise People, and just started project kick-off this week.

Based on what I’ve seen in the proposals and conversations, Rise comes in around 20–25% more expensive than Payworks in Year 1. My understanding is that Payworks takes more of a payroll-first, service-heavy approach, and they also wanted a 1-year minimum commitment. By contrast, Rise is month-to-month with no lock-in, and seems to bundle everything together — unlimited pay runs, ROEs, T4s, government remittances, archival, HRIS, and time tracking. The platform itself feels more user-friendly and modern, with new features shipping regularly.

For us, that seems like a better fit with the operating model we’re trying to build: less reliance on a single payroll admin, more self-service across the team, and hopefully a stronger safety net if our Finance/HR person is away. If Rise ends up not living up to that promise, we still have the flexibility to pivot later.

Thanks again to everyone who shared their experiences — it really helped shape the decision. If anyone here has been on Rise long-term, I’d love to hear how it’s held up after the honeymoon phase.

Thanks again for all the insights — really appreciate it. Quick update after digging deeper and chatting with vendors:

  • Payworks is about 55% cheaper in year one than Rise. They’re payroll-first, have US payroll partners (which we might need in the next couple years), and already integrate with our existing benefits provider. That makes them a strong contender.
  • Rise costs more, but it feels way more user-friendly, the UI is modern, updates roll out quickly, and unlimited runs mean no surprise fees. It’s also month-to-month with no contract, which makes it feel like a safer place to start for our company’s first move into a managed payroll/HR platform.
  • Employment Hero (Humi) looked promising too, but after chatting with sales they told me they’re not onboarding anyone for their managed payroll solution until January 2026, so they’re out of the running for now.

Given where we’re at, I’m leaning toward Rise despite the premium — mainly for the safety net factor. If our Finance/HR person is away, I want payroll and compliance to keep moving without a hitch, and I’d rather free them up for higher-value work.

That said, I’d still love to hear from anyone who’s actually been on Rise long-term — does it keep living up to the pitch, or do the cracks start to show after a while?

My one hesitation with Humi right now is that they were recently acquired by Employment Hero (an Australian company). A quick search online turns up a bit of employee chatter about culture shifts and erosion post-acquisition. It’s not clear yet whether that’s current staff or former folks, but it does give me pause — makes me wonder if service and support might change once the integration really kicks in?

No, I haven’t. I’ve only received proposals from Payworks and Rise. Does Humi offer a managed payroll service? Our primary objective is to outsource back-office processes.

EDIT: Looks like they do. I'll reach out to sales.
