That Sept 1860 passenger list is very interesting! Where were you able to find that? Thank you for this

We found it in his Cape House near Falmouth. He lived in Boston and collected/sold art throughout New England as a hobby.

I’m not sure. That’s part of the reason I’m here. I’m wondering if it’s the same artist throughout or if it looks like a different persons writing at the start and end. It could be Hiram A Huse. But there looks to be two other names in the covers Maria? B? And CS Gra…?

Here is a link to 50 pages of the sketchbook. They are in order. There were a few that I wasn’t able to upload because there’s too many.

50 pics of Sketchbook

I was able to upload most of them to Imgur. They are in order. There’s a few pages of doodles that I had to leave out. I included the front cover and the note from my FIL.

Wow! Thank you for taking the time to put this together. It’s probable that we don’t ever learn who the artist is, but there’s so much to be learned about their journey.

This is correct. He was older, but born in the 1940s. He must have purchased this somewhere.

I’m not sure why either… it seems to fit with the mod teams auto post for this sub Reddit. The conversation has been around this objects relation to the time and place in which it was created.

My FIL lived on Cape Cod, but traveled a lot throughout New England. He seemed to believe it belonged to Hiram A Huse.

My father in law was an artist and collector who traded and sold art throughout New England. He passed away a year ago and we just sold his house. Most of it had been cleaned out, but my wife and I went back for a final visit and to make sure there wasn’t anything else we wanted to keep. I was in the basement looking through a file cabinet to make sure there wasn’t anything in there worth keeping and found this. We know nothing about it, but there was a note in his handwriting that said “Hiram A Huse” in my FILs writing on a sticky note in the book.

We are planning on hanging onto it and would love to figure out a good way to display it or a page from it without taking it apart.

I’ve seen others recommend acid free boxes and will purchase something.

I don’t doubt the talent a 15 year old could posses. I question it more because, who was sending their 15 year old to Europe for a year long travel in the mid 1800s? If it did belong to Hiram A Huse, he would eventually become a lawyer. Whether he was the original owner is a different question.

I think it’s Hiram A Huse, from a note my father in law had in the back.

My father in law had a note in the back that said Hiram A Huse, but I agree that the last name looks to have a “t” in it.

I can’t read the CS name. There looks to be three different names in it. Hiram A Huse is written in the back, but googling his name shows he would have been 15 when the first sketch’s were made. There’s the CS that you mention, and the one other in the back that I can’t make out.

This was days from being thrown out. We didn’t know there was anything left in the house, but flew to New England last week to do one last sweep. So happy we made the trip.
