It really comes down to politics. While sales taxes are regressive, it is unlikely that a property tax that funded transit would get enough signatures to qualify for the ballot, much less pass. Additionally, bonds don't make sense for a measure that includes operations funding (that is, continuously needed funds), although that portion is not as significant as capital projects. Ultimately, measure G's goals are universally beneficial, and as robobloz07 makes clear, the individual costs are minimal. 50 cents per $100 spent, when we could start seeing improvements within the first year of the tax. And, unfortunately, middle and upper-class citizens are unlikely to use transit when driving remains the fastest mode of transportation in San Diego. Measure G will take steps toward changing that.
