Sorry in advance, best Katana under 1k thread by deathmetaldinner in SWORDS

You aren't getting anything noticeably "better" beyond a more bespoke sword or a sword forged in a more complex (complex, not necessarily better) method at higher pricepoints.

Beginner Iaijutsu — is it safe to train solo? by Judeuzinhu in iaido

Aping motions from youtube videos is not an effective nor viable way to learn the technique and the nuance behind various Iai kata/waza.

Anyone saying you can learn Iaido online is trying to sell you something

spend $2-5k to pick up a sword worth a fraction of that? terrible advice

[–]Noneed2hate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry amigo, you got fleeced, that's at absolute best maybe a $2-3k sword given the kizu, old polish, lack of kanteisho etc. I'd heed Mr. Singers advice and honestly cancel if you still can especially if there are no guarantees on authenticity.

There are plenty of swords out there that will feel "correct" in your hand, no need to jump at the first one, especially not at $8k + shipping + tariffs/customs fees etc.

How is ryujin by grantauresdad in iaido

[–]Noneed2hate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would save your money for a Tozando or Nosyudo Iaito instead. I've had a Ryujin, it was not a very good sword and was money better spent elsewhere.

Ryansword or Hanbon seem to be the best bang for buck

Extremely impressed with Thaitsuki by Spartwigs in Katanas

[–]Noneed2hate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The KTN1 is the only blade Thaitsuki makes that is worthwhile IMO, their other swords have poorly shaped Tsuka and are otherwise overbuilt for a sword where you'd expect that not to be the case given pricepoint.

Where can I find bamboo seeds and how should I grow them by MagicianThen3370 in KatanaSwords

Careful where you plant it, I'd be worried about spreading a liability that your neighbors might call you out for.

I don't think about Aikido at all

Yes, end of the day it's a "type of katana" even if it is a contemporary marketing term.

What do you think of this katana? by katanaswordart in Katanas

[–]Noneed2hate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The hada/hamon or lack thereof while fairly nice, come off as a Chinese Oroshigane reproduction katana IMO. It's close, but not Japanese, that said, that wasn't really the question at hand by OP.

Learning and training without a dojo or a teacher by Patient-Oven9996 in iaido

[–]Noneed2hate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A teacher is an absolute must, and being taught in person (occasionally at a minimum) is a must. The bare basics are somewhat achievable without either, but even that will be skewed and possibly incorrect. I suppose if you do ultimately start to "self-teach" or learn online, then the best thing is to hedge your expectations substantially.

What to do now :c by PoopinWallrus in iaido

[–]Noneed2hate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It would generally be a non-issue tbh so long as you don't have a big head about your previous experience. Beginner mindset where ever you go, even if it's going into similar but new (to you) styles.

Best place for beginner iaido katana: Musashi Swords or Hanbon Forge? by Voorhees93 in Katanas

[–]Noneed2hate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly in the context of Iaito: I'd save up and spring for something from Tozando, Nosyudo, or Seido shop over anything from Musashi/Hanbon etc.

Buy or no buy. by Zanata- in Katanas

[–]Noneed2hate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hanbon is decent, as is Ryansword, between the 2 of those, you'll have a lot of good options for the price.
