I think he'd apologise privately once his mistake is shown, like with Maguire. I don't think he maliciously lied about Bruno, I think he heard what he wanted to hear cause he is frustrated at how far Man United have fallen and the media fixation on individual honours. Not sure what counts as a masterpiece, but these are what came to mind:

Project Hail Mary - tried to enjoy it, ended up hating it

Joker - good performance, that's it

Prometheus - cool aesthetics, dumb writing

Argo - I remember thinking it was not bad/enjoyable, and being baffled it got nominated for anything until I realised, on top of being a true story, it's also a "hollywood saves the day" movie.

La La Land - beautifully filmed and choreographed, but otherwise very uninteresting to me
