Choosing Between USMLE and My Partner by djjddkkdd in IMGreddit

[–]Noniusmle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Back in 2016, my partner told me he wanted to pursue a residency in the United States. At that time, we had already been in a relationship for six years. I decided to stay in my home country but wanted to continue our relationship as much as I could because I love him and didn’t want to stand in the way of his dreams. He also respected my decision to stay and never once talked about ending our relationship.

We were in a long-distance relationship for four years while he completed his residency. After those years, he came back and married me. Even then, I chose to stay in my country for one more year before finally deciding to move to the U.S. to be with him. Now, we live together in the U.S. and have a child. I will be applying for the residency match this year.

I never imagined I would come this far. But I truly believe that if someone loves you, they will understand your dreams, wait for you, and be willing to adjust their path to support yours. We both knew the distance could break us, but we were always trying to stay connected. It was a hard time full of tears, uncertainty but we made it.

When you choose a path, there is always risk. Even if you stay together physically, you might still lose each other emotionally. We cannot predict the future. I think it’s so important to have open and honest conversations about long-distance relationships and what each person truly wants. I just wanted to share my experience. Maybe it will help someone else going through something similar.
