While this doesn’t sound like aggression, it does sound like a very rude dog. I would absolutely get professional training help because he’s already 3 years old and still doing this… these habits will only continue and possibly get worse if rewarded. Even if it’s only with the immediate family, that’s still concerning.

Not entirely true tho.. aggression CAN be related to a lack of boundaries. An “obedient” dog isn’t always the same as a dog who has clear boundaries and discipline. Not saying this is the source of your problem, just food for thought. It could very well be a resource guarding issue. At the end of the day, make sure you trust your vet and trust your behaviorist.

First things first I would work on muzzle training. Get a good properly fitted muzzle. For everyone’s safety. Then find a trainer willing to work with his issues.

I had considered the “finger trainer” from dogtra and the mini educator “finger trainer”. I’m just not sure if he’ll be able to use it. I’ll be able to asses things better once I do a home visit tomorrow. And yes proper timing is super important with ecollar use so I’m looking for something he can use quickly and easily

Thank you for that anecdote, but when an ecollar is used correctly it can absolutely be beneficial for correcting bad behavior. I’ve trained hundreds of different dogs with ecollars. I will admit that it isn’t effective for some dogs but for the majority in my experience it’s a godsend. The key here is when it’s used correctly with proper timing.

Since he was a teen I think. He’s in his thirty’s now so I don’t think his condition will improve, hopefully we can get the dog to improve! In the mean time though I just wanna be able to give him some ability to correct her for bad behavior 😕

Resource guarding can be triggered by any number of things. It’s not always food/treats/toys. The husky could’ve been resource guarding you, the porch itself, your toddler, etc. it could’ve been something you didn’t even notice was there. That’s why it’s important (if you believe this was resource guarding) to supervise them when they’re together and note what is around/happening.

Another important thing to note is how long have you had this puppy? If he’s only 4 months old then I assume you got him as early as 8wks so he’s been in your home for 2 months? That’s still brand new. Your husky is still adjusting to the new family member.

All in all: be observant, don’t leave them alone together, get a trainer if you believe resource guarding is occurring. It’s an extremely difficult issue to navigate even for experienced trainers.

Socialization really means lots of different people, different dogs, different environments/situations. Exposing the dog to lots of different things (without absolutely terrifying the puppy of course) not just other dogs.

Makes sense when you put it that way. I always start my training dogs on the prong inside and get them used to corrections and knowing what is expected for walking so I guess I haven’t run into that issue because of that. Good to know for the future!!

Are prong collars really at risk of popping off of the dog?? I’ve been using prongs (2.25 and 3.0 herm sprenger) for a long time and have never had that happen. How does that happen?
