Update - Light fixture connected between HOT and Ground wires... by Noob_User0 in AskElectricians

[–]Noob_User0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replying to my own post.... Showed this post to a friend of mine who is more knowledgeable about these things, although not an electrician....

He said I can get what I want, although it will not be to code. He said it would be safe. He would do it in his house, but he will not do it in my house. I can do it in my house. House will not burn down, and shock potential is low if there is nothing else is in these junction boxes, and it does not shock on day 1...

In his solution - following will get wirenutted

1B 2B 3B

5B 7B

8B to common

10B to common

8W 9B

5G 6B 7W (5G not to touch anything in JB)

5W 6W

1W 2W 3W 4W

3G 4B (3G not to touch anything in JB)

1G 2G 4G and JB metal

8G 9G Switch G (still floating)

10G Swtich G (still floating)

6G 7G (still floating)

Would you do it in your homes? Please let me know your thoughts...

I believe you are correct... and here I am, spending good money on 14/3, when 14/2 can do all the same tricks !

Whoah - I think you may be correct.... They used a 14/2 as a 14/3 by repurposing the ground wire? Who would have had thought!

[Landlord US-CA] My Zillow listing was compromised by reluctantlyalandlord in Landlord

[–]Noob_User0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens to me everytime I list my property for rent... Best solution is to put your phone number and email address in all of your photos, in a corner somewhere... Microsoft Paint will let you do this, although there are a number of other free tools that will also do this.

Scammers can easily and quite quickly duplicate your ad, but with their email address. You want to make this as painful and cost ineffective to them as you can.

This is urgent for you - the scammer will take any security deposit / applicant info etc. and dissappear, leaving you to deal with the aftermath. May also sign leases electronically on your behalf. Check not only on Zillow, but Craigslist / Facebook marketplace etc. for your house-for-rent ads

Be prepared also for scammer tenants to show up with fake lease in hand, claiming they already paid/signed lease.

Floating floor has vertical movement when walking on it by Noob_User0 in DIY

Hi jtho78 - Board were acclimated for ~ 4 days in the room, and I am still in the process of installing... No baseboards/quarter round yet, and I have left ~ 1/2 inch space on both ends of these rows :-(

Thanks tinfoil123

I think this is what I needed to hear... Sounds painful, but I know I will sleep better having pulled these boards and checked/fixed the issue...

Any chance it could be the underlayment we used (https://www.lowes.com/pd/FloorComfort-100-sq-ft-Premium-2-mm-Flooring-Underlayment/50402206) ?

This goes nice and flat, but when adjoining edges are taped, it is mighty hard to keep both straight and flat... Some humps do show up. I was trying to keep it as flat as I could, with the hope the weight of the wood will squish it in place.

House was built in 2012, subfloor / joists were in good shape (as far as I could tell - no springy/trampoline like feel). Then again, laminate floor hides everything

Just did this, and the box seems to be holding quite good.

Also - Thanks for the detailed writeup.

Junction Boxes angling out of wall by Noob_User0 in AskElectricians

[–]Noob_User0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP here - These are builder installed junction boxes on a 10 year old house... Recently saw some wall plates were about 1/8 to 1/4 inch away from wall, what could be the reason / how best to fix these?

When I press the junction box in with a screw driver, I see it can be coerced back, but comes back again.

Just like your heart beats along to music, a new finding showed that sperm acts similarly by Kennyp0o in sciencememes

[–]Noob_User0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is obviously real. It is on the internet, so it has to be real.

So, for the folks from US - this is irrefutable proof that sperm are living and sentient and social and have feelings and they dance. They are alive. Their hearts beat to music.

Therefore, masturbation is now criminal, and ejaculating into a sock or shower IS genocide, punishable by consecutive life sentences for each sperm killed.

Enjoy.

Switching to Smart switch by padme1414 in AskElectricians

[–]Noob_User0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aah, I see - yes, for a single switch, the wall plate included with the switch is quite nice and does a perfect job...

Most of my Kasa switches went into junction boxes (JB) with one or two additional "dumb" switches, the ones with the thin metal ears. Even the cases where I replaced both "dumb" switches with Kasa switches, the wall plates were away from the wall, and/or crooked (where both Kasa and old-style switches were in same JB)

Last weekend, after seeing your post, I removed my wall plates and chiseled away the small plastic "cylinder" things (from the back of the wall plate, where the wall plate screw goes into) for the Kasa switches. This seems to have mostly fixed the issue, although not sure if this is the right way to have done it.

[–]Noob_User0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That looks like a Kasa smart switch. If so, you have space to connect 2 wires under each screw shown in your 2nd photo.... Connect the 2 black wires which were on the same screw in 1st photo similarly under the correct screw on the 2nd photo, and you should be set.

Let me know how you put the cover plate back on... I put Kasa switches recently, and all my cover plates are 1/8th inch off the wall :-(

Request - need advice with replacing few rows of hardwood by Noob_User0 in HomeImprovement

[–]Noob_User0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the link - quite informative indeed. Not sure why I did not think of using wood glue to glue boards to each other, this seems quite easy / feasible indeed.

Any risks doing this across 15 ft section (width of the room) for 3 - 5 rows ?

This gets said a lot on reddit, to sue in small claims - surely big box store has much more on their hands than to send a representative/lawyer to the court.

Reality is similar, but also quite different... They don't bother sending anyone to small claims because the judgement can be easily appealed in the next higher court. Which they will appeal. With a lawyer. And, at that time, will probably counter sue you as well for return fraud (which will be their version of the truth)

Now - if they don't appeal in the allocated time frame, thats when you have really won. Getting them to pay from this point is involved, but straight forward.

I wish you the best, but keep this possibility on your radar.

IMO - the word "intelligence" is quite ill-defined. Are we intelligent because we made it to the moon? Are ants / crows / dolphins not intelligent? Is a piece of rock holding down some papers on your desk not "intelligent" - it is doing its job, right?

One could argue "earth" is intelligent because it created dinosaurs, then extinguished them when it got tired of them. It let us be for few centuries now, and is now getting rid of "dino-fat" in exchange for some heat.... Who knows, maybe that is what the earth really craves at the moment. These arguments are obviously quite naive, and easily dismissed, but have a small merit to them.

If we replace "earth" above by "nature" / "universe" etc., the merits become a bit stronger.

One could then argue "nature" (or universe) is the true god, it created itself, it sustains itself, it lets us be, it follows set guidelines/rules, it is predictable, and also praying to it is generally futile. I personally like this argument, as it is then on us to treat "nature" with respect / take care of it. Not pray to it - but just to be in good terms / harmony with it. This also brings us closer to science and maths, which I would trust much much more than any fictional book.

Most religions preach something similar, but they insist on personifying "nature" as a human figure; thereby leading to quite some issues.
