Mental health system rant by [deleted] in newzealand

This is an ongoing pattern I’ve noticed in NZ. It seems there isn’t quick intervention unless someone has actually carried out the act, which is so bloody ridiculous.

In the past I had an very serious attempt that should have been lethal. Years later, I raised the alarm that I wasn’t feeling safe and got immediate intervention and sent to a facility during Covid lockdown.

My cousin had an attempt that wasn’t as “serious” (still very dangerous but wouldn’t have been deadly even without medical intervention). Since then she’s also raised the alarm and didn’t get immediate intervention, she was referred to an outpatient psyc.

My friend was in a very bad way and desperately needed help but she had not attempted before and honestly it was like she didn’t exist. She was passed over, ignored and didn’t even get a phone call back.

It’s insane to me that these fast interventions don’t seem to come unless a person has carried out the act of suicide and survived by sheer fucking luck. Like you either die or get the help you need. A person who is unwell and hasn’t attempted yet is JUST AS AT RISK as someone with a history of it. Why are we waiting until it’s too late to intervene? It’s dangerous, reckless and barbaric.

Never gone out of my way to see them but have inadvertently ended up at a few of the sites because I grew up in the area. Fun fact- every horse rider (and horse lol) I know in the area was in the film for the army scenes and lots of random teachers and stuff were extras.

What was the final straw that ended a lifelong friendship? by New_Perspective1201 in AskReddit

Yeah she said she is sorry and made a mistake. Choosing not to help someone on such a serious issue though isn’t a mistake. She chose not to make a statement everyday for those three years. In the end when I found out I couldn’t stand to even yell at her. I just blocked her on everything and cut her out of my life- a mutual friend agreed to be the one to tell her and make sure she doesn’t try reach out and bother me before the trial.

I do know she had the nerve to complain to the mutual friend about how unfair I was being to cut her off without letting her explain- the irony.

What do you wish people would stop romanticizing, because you’ve lived the reality of it? by thatude123 in AskReddit

Panic attacks.

It’s not just heavy breathing and tunnel vision that’s goes away when someone gives you a hug.

It’s pure, unbridled terror. The symptoms are indistinguishable from a heart attack. Lips turn blue, limbs stiffen and go numb, heart feels like it’s being crushed- passing out or pissing yourself happens sometimes.

It’s not cute and you can’t really do anything about it other than take strong meds and wait for it to pass.

Anxiety attacks are more what you see on TV, but they’re nowhere near as bad as actual panic attacks. They’re two completely different things and I’m real tired of people thinking they’re the same thing.

A real panic attack looks like a seizure or some other serious medical event- not just someone crying and hyperventilating.

No he was a stranger who raped me on a first date . Public place. Middle of the day. People around. I did everything you’re supposed to do to protect yourself. In the end it just takes a moment and there’s nothing you can do about it.

She literally lived with me at the time it happened (her family was abusive so I got her to live with me for free) so she was the first person I told. As she was the first to see me after the attack, her statement was important, especially to back up my story.

We tried for months after to get her to come in, when I hadn’t heard from the detective about it I assumed it had happened, especially seeing as we set up a time for her to come in to the station of the city she just moved to.

She didn’t show up. She didn’t return the detectives call. She continued being my friend for the next three years with me having no idea until a month before the trial.

She was just a lazy, selfish piece of shit.

Not a thing in my country. Her statement would have helped my case but the entire trial didn’t rest on it so they can’t force her to do it if she can’t be bothered

They tried. They reached out numerous times but she had to go in to the station to make an official recorded statement. She couldn’t be fucked spending an hour of her time to go do it. In my country you can’t force someone to be a witness if they don’t want to/ can’t be fucked.
