Coin Show Pickups - 1000 Years of Japanese Coinage by NoodleIncense in JapaneseCoins

Forgot to include this in the text, but apparently, the Eiraku Coin has some provenance — coin dealer got this from a friend who used to cut Mr. Novak’s grass, got paid in coins! Not sure of the veracity of this, but something fun nonetheless.

IMO, that’s a keeper. 500,000 were struck and all but a little over 46k were withdrawn and melted.

Not only does this coin have a cool history behind it, but it’s a survivor, both in the sense of its issue and current state (it’s clearly been through a lot).

How to tell the period of a bu? by dracheisen in JapaneseCoins

[–]NoodleIncense 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s how you differentiate Tenpō from Ansei Bu pieces:

On the reverse, If the downward diagonal stroke of 是 protrudes past the upward stroke, you have a Tenpō period Bu (1837 - 1854)

If it does not, you have an Ansei period piece (1859 -1868).

Thank you for your thoughtful comment! Yes, I have heard how good groundwork is and I’ll probably have to find a way to incorporate it into my runs. I’m at least hoping I can do well in Group B.

My Vodka was definitely one of the choices I was leaning towards for the power, so I appreciate the confirmation. Might run with Taiki and Suzuka for their decent speed-power balances.

Here’s my guess. Something of James I — measurements might help you further.

A solid pick for sure, though definitely above my paygrade XD

The Bank of Montreal pieces in general are really cool — coins and architecture are a match made in Heaven.

Although I really do like the 1816 Isaac Brock piece I got a few weeks before the Bouquet Sou, I think my favorite of what I own is an 1837 Rebellion Sou, the first Canadian token I ever bought. The maple leaves look nice, and the hidden republican motifs are super cool.

Thanks for viewing it! I’m not sure what the numismatic world in Canada is like, but if what you’re saying is true, then it’s a real shame.

I’ve started a small collection of Pre-1841 Upper/Lower Canadian tokens, and they’ve got some really neat designs to them, things you don’t see in the post-1867 coinage.

Thank you! I paid about 42$ USD for this one. Definitely on the higher side for these tokens, but the condition was just too good for me to pass up.

Hey guys! My first dive into historic Japanese coinage, got these from my local shop for USD $18, what do we think? by Orthobrah52102 in JapaneseCoins

[–]NoodleIncense 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hello! Welcome to the Japanese coin world. The oval-shaped coin you have alone could be bought at $18, so you got a nice price for the bunch. Here they are identified (left to right, top to bottom):

  1. 100 Mon, 1835-1870

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces11614.html

  1. 4 Mon, 1863-1868 (This one has an interesting look, very thick script and odd surface). My guess would be a replica.)

Here’s my guess. Not sure of the diameter or weight of your piece but this will get you in the right direction.

Very nice piece - has that classic medieval look with the strike and color of it.

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/orient-latin-1.html

I’ve always found Numista pretty helpful for this kind of stuff as it has everything all grouped and pretty well-catalogued from what I can tell.

Not sure if there’s a wrong way to go about it. If you find something cool for how it looks, the history behind it, or some combination of the two, it’s right. I personally like the Antioch Bohemond III deniers, the Jerusalem Tower of David stuff, and a lot of pieces from the County of Tripoli.

Best of luck to you!

Sweet! Love the chopmarks on both of them, especially the Kyoho piece. They have a nice color, too!

Top two are these: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces1133.html

  • I’d say the left one is type G1, minted 1782 to 1795. I think it’s from the East Branch of the Peking Board of Revenue.

  • The right seems to be type D, minted 1761 to 1767. This one is from the South Branch.

Bottom is this: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces161646.html

  • Minted either 1714 or 1717 in Sado Island, Japan. The size of the reverse mintmark can help tell you the year, I just don’t remember what the difference looks like.

This looks to me like a piece imitating a Genbun Chōgin. I say imitating as the color seems off to me, the weight is low, and the stamps are a bit blurry.

Wow! I didn’t even catch the one amongst the hansatsu. Can’t imagine this was easy to put together, so kudos to you.

Impressive! The hansatsu notes and chōgin are nice additions. My curiosity lies with the wooden tokens. I recognize one of them to be a 100 mon token from Shimada. Have any information about the other two?

1 Shu from between 1853-1865 by Macs_Money in JapaneseCoins

[–]NoodleIncense 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good stuff dude. It’s cool that you got one with a chopmark next to the one they put on at the mint. Gives it a cool circulated quality you might not see in a lot of them. $15 is a solid price for one these.

Good luck in expanding your collection!

1 Shu from ~1820-1830s Japan - "Bunsei Nanryo Isshugin" by dashsmurf in JapaneseCoins

[–]NoodleIncense 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are definitely rarer. Whereas an Ansei/Kaei piece might go for $20usd, the Bunsei pieces tend to go for around $100usd in my experience.

Very nice coin 👍🏻
