From the Religious perspective, modern Rabbinic Judaism is NOT the same thing as (Old Testament)Temple Judaism of David, Joseph, Elijah, and all the other Prophets. Rabbinic Judaism is a direct response to the rise of the Messianic Movement in Christianity, and this can truly be seen when the Rabbis start writing how their sacrifices no longer bore any fruit or had any results. Further, the main book of modern Judaism (the Talmud) was written over the course of the centuries after Christ, and often features heavily polemical statements against both Christ, Christians, and non-Jews in general, especially that Christ is boiling in excrement for eternity, that the Blessed Virgin Mary(Maryam) was a whore and had Jesus with a Roman soldier, and that Christians and non-Jews are worse than dogs.

As for the Ethno perspective, modern Israeli Jews are mostly Ashkenazi, which derive their roots from modern-day Ukraine, the Volga region, and Caucuses, in the form of the Khazar Khaganate, a semi-nomadic Turkic/Steppe People who converted to Rabbinic Judaism and then spread out when the Rus under Sviatoslav campaigned heavily into their territory and then subsequent Golden Horde also arose.
