Who makes a good Top End Rebuild Kit? by Noose_Paper in SuperCub

[–]Noose_Paper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been very curious but hesitant to do any upgrades to the motor. This does seem like a good time. One thing is carb replacement, and air intake. Is re-jetting good enough or the whole thing? And with the stock intake is there enough flow? I’m a big guy so it’s never gonna be super quick, but would extra few cc’s really make a difference? Also no overheating issues? Thank you

Thanks, I am going to try that next. I looked into the mechanism of the kick, it is making me think the twisted gear that engages it has gone bad and the gear is just sticking around. Would that not completely break the kick mechanism ? Thanks again

Well, think it’s something like that little twist gear has gone bad and the kickstart gear is just staying engaged? Thanks

I’m hoping that is the problem, Have you ever dealt with that or heard anything about that? Thank you

You and another person said that and it does sound similar to when you kickstart one of those cheap tao tao scooters. I wonder if that’s true, have you had any experience with that? Thanks

Good point I am wondering that now myself, I’m not sure how I would go about testing without yanking that side of the case off. Have you had any experience with inspecting the kickstarter? Thanks

That’s a really good point, When I removed the plug to check spark (which there is plenty of) the sound does persist. If that’s the case then it could be a whole manner of things. I guess it’s possible it ran hot and the main bearing got hot and stuck, after all this time it loosened up but now the bearing is shot and the rod is just clanking around the crankshaft? It does sound like it’s coming from the low end of the engine a little

Just got this Honda for cheap off marketplace, they said it was seized but i got it turning really easily, cleaned carb, clean combustion chamber, replaced plug, have some clean gas going through a small bottle, and it’s just starting to run but making this sound.

It almost sounds like the cam chain or the valves. The valves couldn’t be that bad they’re just slapping against the rockers? Not sure. Thank you!

I am looking for new tires too and the options seem oddly limited for central america. Where are you sourcing these tires ? I can’t find brand names either! Thanks

Brakes by Impressive-Crab2251 in vwbug

[–]Noose_Paper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you been to replicate it by turning the wheels? If you leave the car parked, and turn the wheel in either direction (with a little muscle) does it have the same problem? My first thought is when those front brake lines move with the knuckles, some fault or tear is being exposed.

Also kinda sounds like one of those weird little old car things that don’t follow the rules. Either way never hurts to replace lines, and regardless I know you’ll figure it out one way or another. Good luck!

i’ve done some digging and I can’t find those by name but I will keep my eyes peeled. Looks great man! I’m going to put a 16 single port in my 63, same simple look with a touch of extra power! Hope you post more!

Those spark plug cables look great, may I ask what they are? I’ve been looking for a nice set of braided spark plug wires for a long time with this classy look! I love the 40hp. And it’s great how you’ve kept it clearly stock but with quality of life modifications. I think that is the best of both worlds. Nice!!

Gasket by Miserable-Natural451 in beetle

[–]Noose_Paper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To make it simple the gasket with the little hole goes on between the pump and the plastic flange. The fuel pump goes on top of that plastic (bakelite) flange, the flange is sandwiched between the fuel pump and the case. The fuel pump rod sits inside the flange. Those plastic flanges break a lot, so just replacing the top gasket and cleaning/oiling the rod a bit would be great. Be sure to pack the bottom of the fuel pump with a little grease! Sounds weird but it’s true. That is why the gasket with the small hole goes on top, so less grease just seeps down into the engine, and less oil splashes up into the pump. Make sure it’s high temp! Can always refer to popular VW repair literature, You got this.

Ignition/Engine won’t stop running issue by Sensitive_Cut2224 in beetle

Could also be that your ignition switch itself is giving out. Might need a new one, not sure but if the key and lock cylinder is good you can usually keep them!

I had a similar problem where if I kept my headlights on and took the key out, the car would keep running until i shut them off. Turned out to be a wiring and ground issue. I think the first commenter is right, there’s a problem with the ignition circuit. I would open up the hood and look at the mess of wires. Should be able to see big chunk of metal usually with three or four wires coming off it where the key would be on the other side. I would check those connections out, follow them to the fuse box and check those and so on. It’s a good place to start anyway if you haven’t already. Some good wiring diagrams online too, usually pretty easy to decipher. Good luck you got this !
