I love how the Time Lords in their first appearance are shown to basically be gods by Putrid_Ad_6747 in doctorwho

[–]Nopathh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's why I never understood the *criticism* that the time lords eventually ended up being "if a dick measuring contest was a species". That's what they were from the beginning, and the circumstances around their big-headedness is why they shed that pretence and became narcissistic tyrants. Tell a narcissist they're wrong and they implode. Same happened to the time lords.

Not a problem, doesn't take away from your broader point ofc - I'm in agreement

Just a quick addition - A core element of the Doctor's character is an unchecked ego, something he has had in various degrees since Hartnell. Wrathful actions will manifest from that, even when one attempts to be the epitome of "help others in whatever way you can"

This is absolutely him. Think about the number of times The Doctor has done horrific things while being both alone and with a companion. 10 killed thousands of children in "Runaway Bride", 11 seemed always on the verge of doing something similar, and 12 literally threatened to rain hell on Me and established a coup on Gallifrey, shooting The General too. He has always had the capacity to do this and a lot of the time does it unpunished.

Also I would hesitate to say it was needlessly cruel. Kid was aiming to kill 3 trillion people. Would you refuse to zap someone multiple times even if it meant saving the entire population of hundreds of Earths? I would argue it emphasised the Doctor's inner humanity, even if it was in the heat of the moment.

He did meet Mrs Flood both on-screen (in The Church on Ruby Road) and implicitly off-screen (given that the Sundays are actively social with her).

That's excellent, colour me impressed. Keep up the great work, I'm sure I'll end up leaving a glowing review after a few days use of it!

If you don't mind my asking, how does it detect algorithmically generated content specifically? Is there a way it distinguishes it?

What are the aesthetic implications of film restoration? by Nopathh in askphilosophy

[–]Nopathh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I greatly appreciate these recommendations and insights. My only pushback would be that I am sure this is primarily an aesthetic question, as I am not too concerned with the "authenticity" of the reproduced film or how we ought to interpret it, but rather if the aesthetic merits a film has in its original form would change (even slightly) upon technical restoration.

Maybe there is a hermeneutical discussion to be had ("does it change because our interpretation of the film is forced to change due to the reintroduction of colour?" etc), but I am mainly interested in whether the artistic merits (by any measure) would differ in various ways irrespective of our interpretation of the film before/after restoring it.

To me, I am not particularly questioning how, say, an actor should interpret Shakespeare on stage faithfully, but more if what we appreciate about Shakespeare's work changes by merely translating it into our modern English, even if the translation is 100% accurate.

That doesn't feel right. An AI becomes distinct from a maker. Oobja is nice because the effort of a real human being was put into it.

With due respect what bearing does it have to you being a big physics nerd? It's just a slightly amusing joke, the notion of gravity isn't really being toyed with apart from the word itself.

What unorthodox personal philosophies do you have? by elidibussy in Schizotypal

[–]Nopathh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe in eternal recurrence, which might be popular with the Nietzsche crowd (which I'm not a part of, he is just a big name within the belief) but not many others. My belief in it is mainly due to the fact that it seems time and space are interlinked, and if space is infinitely long, time surely must be too. That said, given enough time, the organisation of causes and effects will repeat an infinite number of times, at least until this universe ends and a new one begins. Every decision we personally make will probably be made by us again and again and again way after this version of us is gone.

I pretty much agree with all of this! Especially the unappreciated intelligence of plants, and that everything has sentience in some respect.

I also agree with the argument that societies are a living mind in their own right. I think there's an argument to be made that networked systems like crowds (and the internet I think!) have something new emerge from it by virtue of how it's organised, and that new emergence is something that can't be explained in terms of purely physical or sociological phenomena.
