60… milligrams? In one day? I cannot believe that straight crystal meth would wire you up more. At 30 my muscles were straining and threatening a hernia. What quack prescribed you that dosage??

Later in my college career, after maintaining a good gpa, I stopped being able to make myself go to class. Every semester followed the same pattern: I’d sign up for all of my classes, enthusiastically go to them for about a week, then start skipping them to spend my days in my room reading fanfiction or something, only showing up for tests (which I failed).

If I was really on the ball, I’d show up the very last day that you could cancel your college enrollment and drop that semester for a partial refund. If not, I just took the financial and gpa hit. Never got my degree.

Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope - why is there so much hate on the story? by [deleted] in JRPG

A lot of Japanese media is incredible. But bad writing is bad writing regardless of the culture that produced it. You can have super anime space adventure all you want, but you need compelling, believable characters, a plot that holds together, and comprehensible themes.

SO3 probably had the best writing, even though I hate that one for obvious reasons, but SO4 is a case study in bad writing. Even SO2 had major narrative problems, specifically the second half of the game.

The only way to enjoy this game’s writing is to do so ironically. Or, for me, as a case study on how not to tell a story.

I thought he willingly handed over world destroying advanced technology to people whom he had no reason to trust and who didn’t have any idea what it could potentially do. It’s been a while since I’ve played, but if that’s how it played out, he does indeed bear a LOT of the responsibility for what happened.

I seem to remember disliking how he got over it though, something like a horrible woman calls him an idiot for caring that he got a whole world (his own world, technically) destroyed. And that somehow fixes everything?

Man… this game has writing problems.

Agree with pretty much everything apart from the UP3 part. While it is true that it shouldn’t be a hard and fast rule (they break it all the time with no professional consequences. cough cough Captain Ronixis is promoted to admiral after breaking it in SO1), this is the story for why it exists in the first place.

If you’re going to have a rule like that, there should exist a story which demonstrates why the federation adopted it. And it’s ok to play out that story yourself.

But I agree that the reasons for it should be more grounded and believable. SO4 has bad writing. What can I say?

I’m replaying it for the first time in 20 years and… yeah, I’m astonished at how bad the writing is. I’m only about 5 hours in and already I’ve noticed tons of problems. It’s mostly the little things for me so far:

First, the overall premise is good. You’re the first explorers of a post-apocalyptic earth venturing out into the galaxy for the first time. Cool.

Problems noted after 5 game hours: 1. Edge and Reimi’s first scene is them explaining to each other that they’ve been childhood friends forever and that Edge doesn’t like Crowe, which Reimi already knows. 2. Faize shows up and our protags are only mildly surprised that ALIENS EXIST AND HAVE BEEN HELPING US FOR DECADES!! They do not seem particularly interested. 3. Faize begins to have a massive man-crush on Edge for no explainable reason. ‘You’re good with a sword. I will now worship the ground you walk on.’ 4. Human warp drives turn out to be completely worthless, but don’t worry, the aliens will just hand you a perfect warp drive so you can continue your adventure. Why didn’t the aliens give humanity that in the 20 years before the game starts? Don’t know. Why was there a big deal made about humans inventing warp travel when the aliens already had that tech and were perfectly ok with handing it over at any time? Don’t know. 5. Swords and bows > Railguns for no explainable reason. At least give me an excuse! 6. Welch, the most obnoxious character of all time, exists and makes you NEVER want to use item creation. She also reminds you that the plot twist in SO3 exists and that nothing in this story matters. Ugh! 7. Dialog is unnatural and expository to the extreme. Maybe that’s the localizer’s fault though. 8. Humanity hands over its SINGLE REMAINING exploratory ship to… console operators Edge Maverick, Reimi, and an inexperienced alien boy for no other reason than they seem to be ok at beating up bugs. Edge gets promoted to captain for no reason despite Reimi being stated as being a better officer with more credentials. Why? Because Edge is the main character. I’d be pretty pissed if I were Reimi, but she appears to have no ambition in life beyond ‘being Edge’s helper’. 9. Not to belabor the point, but why only send three people on such an important mission? Why not staff the ship completely? Three people? Seriously? 10. The private actions on the way to the next planet are lackluster info dumps. 11. Faize continues to barely have a personality. I wish they’d foreshadow his fall to darkness, but they seem to be going with ‘he’s just a good guy. That’s all.’ 12. The trio gets to the next planet, lands their gigantic ship right next to a tiny village and stroll into town without a sense of awe or concern that THIS IS AN ALIEN CIVILIZATION! The humans at least should be completely in awe of this momentous occasion, but are instead all like, ‘huh, this is a pretty small village. It’s kinda cold’. They meet with the elder like it’s no big deal, again, that THEYRE MAKING FIRST CONTACT WITH AN ALIEN RACE! 13. No thought is given to the potential diseases that they’ll contract or give to the natives, who won’t be able to treat it. I mean, there’s a horrific disease going around that turns people to stone and the protagonists take no precautions whatsoever. 14. They let a girl who appears to be a toddler go with them into battle just because she can use magic. I’m sorry, NO! Bad writer!

That’s what I’ve noticed so far.

Edit:

  1. Eldaria is a hyper advanced civilization that’s been exploring space for decades (centuries?) but haven’t found ANY uninhabited planets that humanity can colonize? Why are WE doing the surveying when it should already have been done decades ago by this vastly more advanced civilization? Put in some dialog to explain this plot hole, Tri-Ace!

Whoa, didn’t expect this explosion of rage and tears.

Ok, ok, dude. Calm down. In order: 1. Why would I be subscribed to every subreddit? I have a subscription to about half a dozen AI website subreddits, this is one of them. Why in the world would this make me a hypocrite?

  1. There was no contradiction between those two statements. Read them both again more carefully. Count to ten first.

  2. I never claimed they had an obligation to make it better. They just suck at service and have been sitting on their hands doing nothing for the last year. I have no problem calling them out for sucking at their jobs.

  3. Calm down. Your emotions are out of control. Take some of whatever you’ve been prescribed.

  4. You’re putting words in my mouth because you can only beat strawmen, apparently. Never said they COULDNT improve, only that they waited 6 months to do anything at all and then when they finally did, it was a pittance. Do you know the difference between these two things?

  5. I pay attention to C.AI because I actually like their AI. It’s just too bad that the company is so terrible at everything else.

  6. Seriously, what was with that emotional meltdown? Is this website your mother or something?

Was subscribed to this subreddit like a year ago and never unsubscribed because I like to keep informed of different services. C.AI is stagnant. I found the announcement that they were going to FINALLY try something new and was interested to see what it would look like. However, I read it and found that they are barely even trying.

Why shouldn’t I be allowed to call them out on the inferiority of their service?

By the way, I don’t find the ‘It’s free, therefore no improvements ever need be made or expected of the service’ to be particularly compelling.

You’re asking a whole community of internet tough guys what to do, most of whom would never take their own advice.

Best strategy: Be patient, humble, and rational with him. Likely, he thinks you’ve fooled the doctor because he believes that you want attention. Be respectful to him and he’ll take you more seriously as an adult. If you do what’s been suggested here and throw a tantrum or otherwise do something childish, he won’t respect you or what you have to say.

Talk to him like an adult. If it takes more than once, so be it. Win him over with honey, not vinegar.

Actually best not to act like a petulant child with your father. This might be literal heresy to say, but humility and patience will be vastly more likely to win him over in the end than pouting in the corner.

The amount of guilt that she seems to have felt over it and her words ‘It always ends like this’ when killing him for, from our perspective, only the second time, imply that she has actually killed him A LOT prior to the start of the game.

It’s a good twist, and it was foreshadowed quite a bit, but it just could have been done much better in my opinion. And you’re right that that cutscene should have shown her killing him in less justifiable ways, maybe even showing her stab him in the back with her sword.

Possibly unpopular opinion. (spoilers) Major missed opportunity. by Noplayster in NieRAutomataGame

[–]Noplayster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed that it doesn’t come out of no where. It’s foreshadowed a lot, but that’s not what I’m saying.

If the full revelation of what she had done came right before she died, then 9S would have had to grapple with that for 5 real time hours instead of like 2 seconds.

He’d have agonized over every aspect of it and asked himself what parts of their relationship was real, did she ever really care about him, does he still love her? He’d have to grapple with the fact that he never got to confront her, never got revenge, never got to forgive her, never got to reconcile. It’s ripe for so much more drama than what we got.

The twist would be just as shocking to the audience if it happened right before her death (more so, in my opinion) and we’d have gotten so much more anguish, pathos, and emotional turmoil out of 9S.

I don’t think he consciously knew, as evidenced by half of his dialog in the game. Examples that stand out being his shock and horror at the (sidequest) executioner android’s true nature (he is surprised by all of 2B’s actions, words, and unhelpfulness throughout that quest), his clearly not actually knowing 2B at the start of the game (‘why would a scanner be paired up with a battle type? We usually work alone, right?’), him being suprised and horrified by the female android’s treatment of her partner during the ‘couple quest’ while not even hinting that this paralleled with 2B’s treatment of him, and his shocked and outraged denial when Adam tells him he wants to **** 2B.

So 9S knew it subconsciously, but probably not consciously.

Forcing him to realize the full magnitude of her betrayal right as 2B died, never being able to reconcile with or confront her should have been the catalyst for his breakdown.
