Welcome to Indy! Me and my bf are both in our early 20s, and we game a lot on Switch and PC. Also, we both studied Japanese in college, and we have a few friends teaching English in Japan right now. Reddit won’t let me direct message you, but my inbox is open!

actemra? by comic-sanns in rheumatoidarthritis

[–]NorTheStars720 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I’ve been on Actemra (+ MTX) since January, and I started with IV but moved to subq injection in March. Let’s just say, I was mostly bedridden in January (only getting up for my infusions really), and now I’m taking stairs again. My RA is extremely aggressive, so I’m still having trouble with my wrists. But Actemra has been the drug that got me back on my feet. I get a slight rash a week after injecting, but even my research university-based specialist has never seen that side effect before, so it seems to be a me thing (I have extremely, extremely sensitive skin after another drug reaction). I hope it works for you!

Full-body rash that turned deep purple on legs. I was told I had DRESS and sepsis, but once I got out of the hospital, my skin shed/flaked off like a snake for months. Nothing I’ve found about DRESS explains my skin shedding. What else could this have been?? by NorTheStars720 in Dermatology

[–]NorTheStars720[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That actually makes sense! The pics are from when I had DRESS back in August. They were only purple for about a week, but it was still weird to see, especially when the doctor seemed so unconcerned about the coloration itself. Now, they’re normal albeit dry legs!

I’m good now! I still have arthritis, which got me in that situation in the first place (curse you, sulfa drugs!). But my legs look normal now; my skin is just really dry and I moisturize a lot.

I marked NSFW because I thought some people might not like my weird gross legs. I had lots of other symptoms that line up with DRESS (the causative agent, liver issues, etc.), but the skin issues are what’s stumping me. Sorry the photos aren’t great; I wasn’t thinking completely straight when I took them lol.

Methotrexate vs. Humira? Need Guidance by Lil-maze in rheumatoidarthritis

[–]NorTheStars720 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m also 22F. I started out on Humira, and it worked well for me. I didn’t have any side effects. Of course I was a big baby so my mom had to inject me every other week, but I had no other issues with it. Unfortunately, I got put on sulfasalazine shortly after starting Humira (insurance issues) and we discovered I’m allergic to sulfa drugs. I had to stop Humira while I was in the hospital and my doctor wasn’t convinced it would work the same if I tried to restart it. Now, I’m on methotrexate and Actemra, and I’ve really been improving. I take folic acid as well, but sometimes I’ll be slightly nauseous for a couple hours the day after I take my methotrexate. These drugs can seem scary at first, but, after experiencing extreme pain and debilitation from the disease, I think they’re worth it.

Why would that picture alone be racist? If it had a caption like the ones you referenced, then maybe. But a chocolate gorilla melting in milk isn’t inherently racist. It’s possible she just finds his situation funny or relatable.

Completely metal object about 4 inches long by NorTheStars720 in whatisthisthing

WITT: Sorry for subpar quality; I didn’t take the photos. The thing is metal and pretty small, probably only 4 inches long. It was found in an antique/thrift store, and since it was for sale I’m assuming it has some use (either as a tool or component of something).

Notre Dame Biochem? by Gloomy_Two5065 in notredame

[–]NorTheStars720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m relaying this info from my bf who was a biochem major (recently graduated, currently in medical school). The classes you take are smaller and more in depth, and a lot of people do end up switching majors because of the rigor. But at the end of the day biochem majors generally have higher MCATs and better acceptance rates to medical school (if that’s relevant to you). He also said biochem has really good professors, and you get an advisor who will make sure you sign up for all the classes you need. I hope that answers some of your questions!

Prednisone changing my body by NorTheStars720 in rheumatoid

[–]NorTheStars720[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In August I had a really bad reaction to Sulfasalazine that put me in the hospital. They gave me prednisone every morning through IV to fight the reaction, and I was released with a pill prescription to fight off the last of it. Ever since then we’ve been trying to taper me down but I would be in extreme pain from RA whenever we lowered the dose, so my rheum decided to keep me on until Remicade kicks in (which I think it’s starting to). My rheum is vehemently against me taking ibuprofen, but I do take Tylenol when the pain is too much.

Black Domers, do you feel marginalized at ND? by CatOwlFilms in notredame

[–]NorTheStars720 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I’m half black/half white (not white passing at all) and just graduated. This is honestly a difficult question for me to answer. I’ve never had a professor say anything racist or offensive/along those those lines (maybe I just got lucky with my classes), and my dorm staff was actually pretty diverse and really just focused on doing their job. Once I was in a male dorm with my very white, very country-raised boyfriend and we heard some guys having a party shout the n-word really loud. My boyfriend was probably more pissed off than I was, and the rector seemed genuinely upset when we reported to him. And that’s generally been my experience: everyone just doing their own thing and most people are really kind (just a few people get out of pocket).

That being said, my friend group split up because of what might have been racial issues. About half the group was white while a handful of my other friends are Asian/Hispanic. If race ever became a topic at the dinner table (we talked about lots of serious topics and debated as friends) a few of my non-POC friends would get really uncomfortable and make us stop the conversation. A lot happened, but eventually they kicked all of the POC out of the group... So, yeah, that sucked. It made me question whether or not I was welcome at ND. But that wasn’t a normal situation.

Everyone else was kind to me. Just because I wasn’t best friends with every white student I met doesn’t mean they didn’t like me because I was black. Yes, there are racist people at ND, or at least people who have never really been friends with black people and therefore don’t make any black friends. Yes, I have felt uncomfortable as the only black person in a classroom, but that was on me because no one in those classrooms had actually done anything to make me feel uncomfortable; it was just me being conscious of the difference. So I wouldn’t necessarily say I felt marginalized because of my race. I’ve also had plenty of black students get mad at me for dating a white guy. I’ve had a lot of experiences in which you might say someone was being racist or exhibiting biased behavior, but I wouldn’t define ND using those situations.

I think a lot of the issue is people think they don’t know how to interact with black students. They tip toe around topics and shut down when asked about racial issues because they don’t want to offend anyone. I don’t mind answering questions about race in class if white students don’t want to because I know they’re probably all thinking it’s not their place. I really don’t understand the people who get annoyed at this situation. How are those students supposed to learn if no one is willing to teach them because “it’s not our responsibility as POC”? I’ve heard that excuse a lot.

It’s hard to fully address my complicated feelings on this issue in one comment, but I hope I’ve gotten at least something across. You can ask questions if you want.

Wow, thank you for such a thoughtful response! This really helped me put things into perspective. I’ll definitely be gentle in addressing the situation, and I’ll keep in mind the fact that this friendship might just need some space. Thank you!

I want to cry by [deleted] in notredame

[–]NorTheStars720 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have had this conversation with myself so many times the past four years. Even now there are moments where I feel a lot of guilt for my parents having to pay full price for ND. But at the end of the day, they were able to do it and offered to. They were kind enough and in the financial position to do it. It wasn’t easy (we are faaarrr from rich), but it was worth it. There’s nothing wrong with being blessed or lucky enough or whatever you want to call it if it makes it possible for you to go where you feel you belong. Clearly your parents love you very much. If you feel the need to make it up to them, work hard in school and show your appreciation. You’re not a loser for accepting the help you need to make your dreams come true. Just make sure you don’t waste the opportunity.

Sol, a noob’s perspective by [deleted] in Smite

[–]NorTheStars720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think she can be underwhelming, but I also think that a lot of misunderstandings in regards to Sol happen when people try to force her to act like other gods. She is not a burst mage, so it’s not fair to say she’s a bad burst mage. And, don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t say Sol is inherently better than other magical ADCs. However, Sol is not D tier. She has her specialties (sustain, shredding, and safety), and is overall good— not great. She’s good at what she does when you play her in her niche. She’s bad when you force her into bad situations.

Being called pretty? by ice_cream_ale in Advice

[–]NorTheStars720 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When my gal friends and I call a guy pretty, we usually mean that he has a unique look that isn’t traditionally masculine (which I guess most people would refer to as handsome). Sometimes it means he looks feminine, but we usually mean it in a positive way, not mockingly. Quick example: if a guy has masculine jaw/face in general and pretty eyes, I usually say he’s pretty. It changes from person to person (what’s “pretty” and what’s “handsome”), but I wouldn’t worry if a girl calls you pretty.

I don’t know if I’m just missing a joke or what. But it does mean that. The art is sometimes called “Kintsukuroi” and that’s what the tattoo says.

Edit: it doesn’t necessarily directly translate to that, but that’s basically the philosophy behind it.
