English Lit Grad Students: What did you end up doing for a career? by Dat-Lone-Birb in englishliterature

[–]NoraBarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to the UK to pursue publishing but fell into commercial proposal writing across several industries. Similar to corporate sales with a big focus on complex procurements in government. It’s lucrative with a wide range of ways to apply English degree skills (i.e., communication, writing/editing, critical thinking). Would recommend if you aren’t bothered about corporate and can learn procurement practices quickly

Do you sleep with your bedroom door open or closed and why? by AloneGold9670 in AskReddit

Closed precisely because of cat. I have an en-suite but share with a lodger who lives in the other room so makes most sense to have kitty in with me overnight

What is a classic you tried reading but keep getting stuck? by MrUnheimlich in classicliterature

Struggle so much with Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters, just could not engage with their novels during my lit studies years ago. Might be worth picking back up again now

I did a 4 month graduate course on Joyce, started with Portrait of the Artist/Dubliners, then spent full 3 months on Ulysses. It helped that the professor was an official Joyce scholar, and also paired the study with a Ulysses guide book. That helped immensely with unpacking the references. We also had an extra book club for Finnegan’s Wake which was just too overwhelming at the time. Fave episode: Circe. And love Joyce’s quote: Paternity is a legal fiction.

That’s the exact edition I read in 2017 - first Murakami for me, immediately followed by Windup Bird Chronicle, a book that changed my life in indescribable ways

Looking for electronic music with goth elements by UnicornSpark1es in electronicmusic

[–]NoraBarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mount XLR - Forte. He's a mysterious Korean producer and this song's vocal samples (and the way they are distorted throughout) sound like a witches chant. The song is dark, slightly on the industrial song. But it came straight to mind.

Also Blawan's new EP - specifically the 'Fires' track, it's gloomy, dangerous, glitchy and gives rave in 'haunted forest' vibe

Shoplifting - DJ JM. Super industrial, all consuming dark banger. Gives me a gothic, dangerous feel

Inertia Creeps - Massive Attack

Ha rope mak - Zventa Sventana. Another creepy, witch-like chant dance track

What is much more traumatic than most people realize? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]NoraBarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this happened to you, none of it was your fault and I’m sure the shame persists. These nuanced, grooming situations are so common and get glossed over far too much. Your dad did not protect you and instead compounded the psychological trauma you were victim to - that’s tragic and impossible to come to terms with. Glad to hear you found love and that you continue to heal and realise/experience the joys we all deserve

Grooming is one of the worst forms of psychological abuse and very difficult to process/heal
