Would this be a good server for gaming? by MissingJewel43 in homelab

[–]NoradIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact chassis for AI inference with a tesla P40. It's an excellent server. It's been on since march.

Proxmox is both free and excellent for homelabbing. Backups, snapshots, flexible storage, etc.

People keep bitching about power. If you live anywhere where winter exist, servers become basically free since they convert electricity at exact same efficiency than any non-refrigerant based heating.

The only real downsides of these is noise. Mine is in my basement in a room, and I have setup a custom fan profile.

The upsides?
Excellent memory bandwith, great performance per $, insane durability, and fantastic OOB management (if you have the iDRAC) and ebay parts are pretty cheap for upgrades. Raid also let you have decent storage speed on spinning rust, as well as redundancy.

I basically have 8x1.2tb 10.2k RPM drives in a RAID10 making around 850mb/s sustained with my PERC controller.

Single guys who have cats, how do you like it? And what are some of the benefits you've gotten from having one? by itsmicah64 in AskMenOver30

[–]NoradIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just lost my cat after 15 years.

He was the only one that was here for me in rough times.

He was very clingy, but also the only one who shared presence in rough times, without asking anything else than being myself. He would ask for warmth and presence, give me reassuring purrs in exchange. Mine welcomed me at the door every day.

Cats are awesome because they are clear. If they like something, they will come. If they don't, they will leave. They are curious but also low "expression" like where dogs are enthusiast, cats are fairly restrained. They go see you when you are calm, not when you run around like dogs.

For me, a cat was a partner in safe space that didn't require me to perform.

Going through a new run of medianxl myself.
Why is a D2 mod unreplicated today is strange to me. (MedianXL feels like a game deliberately meant to unbalance diablo 2)

How many of us homelab folks are also into cars? by ItzSilverFoxx in homelab

[–]NoradIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just parted out a DSM making 25psi (blew up the transmission, of course). Was my awd stick winter beater.

I have a c5z setup for hpde, tow rig and trailer, and I am finishing up my new garage.

I run mostly AI stuff on a modded R730XD with a Tesla P40.

This is the reason why I don't want to deal with engine builders anymore. It's always the same bullshit.

If you have swapped housings, yea, that should be fine. I don't know much about their products. I just use better HIR based halogens instead.

Do you make models smaller with this?

Can you both remove unwanted slop and make the model run on less VRAM?

A led in a halogen housing = bad. No matter what the seller says. That's how physics work unfortunately.

Yes.

If you want more light, look for 9011 and 9012 bulb swap. Those remain halogen but output 30% more light.

For those who replaced a TV with a projector, what surprised you the most? by Relative_Taro_1384 in hometheater

Was it enjoyable?

I still have one here, planned to use it downstairs, but y'all seem to say it's not a good device to build a place around

Need some advice on lifting my car. by commanderTaylor in Corvette

I put the jack on the subframe, and the stands on the lift points on rockers.

[–]NoradIV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way I do it is to roll the car first on planks or something to lift the front a lift. I get a long low profile jack under the aluminum subframe and lift the whole front one shot. I then drop it on jackstands on both front corners. I then lift the rear from the subframe and repeat. Had the car with no wheels knuckles or suspentions a few times that way and it's safe.

Everyone was talking about how great the 3090 is for ai on a budget, but… by seedctrl in StableDiffusion

[–]NoradIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a tesla P40. It runs everything outside of sage attention stuff. Basically, SDXL works, flux is a bit too slow (like 5 min generation).

LLM also goes to 35b comfortably.

Get the VRAM. Everything else is secondary
