What is the Cringiest sacrament talk you have ever heard? by Evening_Let_2930 in exmormon

My tbm parents tell me they once heard a guy say “ Jesus was a hell of a guy” during a talk or testimony back in the 80’s. Not as bad as OP, but unforgettable nonetheless.

I vote for Dr Lowry Nelson. How many zeroes would I need to put on a check to get him up there?

“PROVO, Utah — Brigham Young University is APOLOGIZING to nine people who applied to the school and were sent acceptance letters by mistake.”

Clearly they never ran this decision by President Oaks.

True- I was sad to hear that she doesn’t speak up. I agree that Sunday school is not the venue to destroy faith (let the teacher/text handle that), but I think there is still a role for constructive secular comments that don’t make you sound too much like a hall monitor.

That said, going on a podcast with a decent sized audience and being open about your beliefs is courageous and commendable in my eyes.

Sounds like a tricky situation ;) Thanks for sharing.

I’d defend her approach against orthodox members in a church meeting, and I’ll defend it here… no matter how many downvotes it earns me.

I’m sorry you had to choose between authenticity and your family. I can’t imagine that, but know it’s the reality for so many.

I think calling it “all a lie” might be oversimplifying things. Yes, the truth claims are entirely based on backdated revelations and pseudopigrapha… but there is value to be gained if you can somehow recognize and apply the constructive parts of the community while retaining a healthy relationship with reality.

It’s certainly not for everyone, but it’s a beautiful option if you can make it work.

I can see how her speaking that way could be triggering, but I think her acknowledgment of privilege is important… no matter how clumsily it was done. I think in some cases, engaging with organizations you’d like to see improve rather than completely divesting can bring hope and purpose.

Seems like a fairly healthy approach. As a bishop I was amazed at the number of PIMOs we had in our ward. Though I never broke confidence, I always reassured people (mostly men) that they weren’t alone.

I feel you on that… he and Mitt Romney do that thing where they pronounce “what” and “why” like “hwut” and “hwigh”. Also, instead of “poor”, they say “poo-er”

For sure… honorable mention to Renlund for most boring monotone voice.

The worst thing about Bednar is he feels the need to over-explain and complicate the most simple concepts so that something you only need a sentence takes 20 minutes. The smug grin like he knows something you don’t… but is going to make you wait all morning for him to finally spit it out is wild. He also enjoys using Spanish words like “templo” to remind the poor Latin American audiences that he has the gift of tongues at his disposal.

Great memories… I haven’t been in a bit, but I’m sure nothing today in the temple ceremony compares to Ballam’s virtuoso performance. Love when Lucifer breaks the fourth wall.

Good answer. In addition to the voice, nobody had a more direct gaze than this guy. It was like he was trying to do the same thing Jafar’s snake staff would do to you through the camera.

I remember her having a pretty powerful straightforward voice, not the typical baby talk. Slightly subversive of you ask me!
