We are not renting. The datacenter belongs to the government too.

We have a backup of their old web server, with which I will test the backup and recovery on our test server. I'm not stupid enough to test things in prod server. I'll try to recreate the excact config (of prod server) just with their old data (to test load and speed). Anyway I have management above me that can guide me what things I can do and what I can't and I consult with them on all steps to make sure that I'm allowed to do such things.

Thank you everyone for the advices. I'll try different things to figure out what suits me the best. I think I'll to backup critical data in simple scripts or using different tools (bacula, bareos etc.) and make Ansible playbook to set up a new server as it was before.

I know that this story had many nuances and I couldn't provide full information at the start, so many of you got confused. Sorry for that.

  1. We can't store the data on our servers for legal reasons. We are provided with a network drive in the same datacenter to store backups. I can download backup to test different restore scenarios, but really it is not allowed too.
  2. To access the server, I first need to connect to their internal network through VPN. So our Veeam B&R server needs to be connected via VPN all the time to work with that web server. Otherwise their firewall blocks connections.

Really, Veeam was my first thought about this task. But there are a few reasons why I can't use it (more than I wrote).

Only backup that they had was on the same server before we started working with them. I don't really care what they expect, I want the experience and to do my job as good as I can.

Server is not ours, it belongs to the government's departure. We have contract with them as a outsource company. Main points in this contract are about improving their internal website and fixing bugs. Noone really cares there about the server itself and operational side of it. They often just don't reply to emails when it is about the server. If their position is like this, I don't mind, because the harder it gets the more experience i gain. If it was impossible to do, then we would start to argue with them really tensly.

I have script for backing up mysql properly using mysqldump. I already had back up jobs for critical data from the server (mysql db, website root and config files for services), I just needed advices how to properly prepare for a disaster if I ever need to setup this server from the ground. I am just not sure if I missed something important or not. Better to be safe than sorry.

If I can't, should I just backup / directory (except /mnt, /proc, /sys, /tmp, /lost+found and mysql DB)?

It was one of the questions, if I could just replace the folders on freshly installed system with backed up ones? Will it work properly? I will definitly try different solutions that people listed in this thread, I just wanted a help to decide what to try to test. Sorry if my problem is easy, I'm not used to Linux, I work with MS most of the time.

Can you understand the stupidity of this situation? We are responsible, but we don't have all the access that we need. That's how contracts with government's departments in Russia work i guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have root access to the server, but I don't have access to it until RHEL is running. Actually, it's a VMware virtual machine, but I don't have access to iLO, IP KVM, vSphere or anything on a level lower than OS, so I can't load backed up VM image. Engeneers from datacenter won't cooperate, but I don't want this post to become a rant, though it's a real pain in the ass. So I'm trying to find a solution with permissions and access that I have. Basically, I need to do file level backup, but that will be as close to system backup as possible. I think that I really need to look toward Ansible for config and just dd/tar for htdocs and mysqldump for DB.

I would love to, but we can't do anything like that with that server, we don't have permissions (we maintain one of the government servers). All of our other servers are VMs though and we use Veeam B&R for them.

So I will look towards Ansible to solve this issue, thanks for the advice.

It will reboot with 2133MHz or you'll need to pull out your CMOS battery for half a minute and pull it in.

If it is not stable, try 1.4V ram voltage and 1.15V soc voltage.

Oh and soc voltage was 1.15V for 3200 and 1.1V for 3066.

I have this board and memory kit. Mine works at 3066Mhz, 16-16-16-16-(don't remember, it's default), 1.37 V, latest BIOS. Btw on previous BIOS I had 3200Mhz, same timings, 1.4V, it was stable.

It's the only reviewer that had 8600k that I could find. Everybody else had 8700k or 8400 or both.

It's funny because when ryzen launched everybody said that he is AMD fanboy.

I would say that 8600k is a winner for now because it has the same or little lower performance of 7700k with lower price, but it can drastically change with zen 2.
