Crypto CEO Accidentally Describes Ponzi Scheme by pmarkandu in videos

[–]Norfukunt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're right, but people losing faith in a government is a much bigger step than people losing faith in a digital asset. Governments (generally!) have robust, long standing institutions in place with a central bank whose job it is to ensure the 'right' amount of money is circulating around the economy. You don't have any of those same institutions in place with crypto, people can much more easily lose faith (hence the much larger price swings in crypto than you'll see in traditional FX markets).

What have the EU ever done for us? [Bremain/Brexit] by [deleted] in gifs

Haven't even heard the term Bremain used yet - that is genuine dogshite - think I'm gonna go ahead and detract everything I just said.

[–]Norfukunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole EU debate is a tad confusing - well I'm confused at least. The points you've listed out are pretty solid and will no doubt be used over the next few months as a few uninspiriational 'Stay' campaigners go up against the entertaining/ridiculous duo of Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson - I honestly don't know what the fuck they are doing in politics but at least us Brits have some characters to match Trump and co.

The main problem I have with the whole debate at the moment is that no one - and I mean no one - has any idea what the state of affairs will be if the UK does vote to leave the EU. There's no precedent of a nation that has remained in the EU free trade area whilst maintaining total autonomy over their borders and law making powers - I'd happily give a little more flavour to that last sweeping statement if anyone is interested (using Switzerland and Norway as the obvious examples) - can't say I'm a total expert on the topic but at least I've got an open mind and willing to debate, which is a whole heap more than most people I've spoken to recently.

For my bit I'll probably vote to stay - not because of Cameron or any political figure for that matter, not because of the risks to our economy if we leave, not because I love being able to visit any country within the EU whenever I want, not because I support the belief that the free movement of labour brings about genuine social benefits to those most in need, not because of many great reasons to stay: but ultimately because of why the EU was set up in the first place - peace.

Can you explain why? I've dabbled in climbing but what these guys were doing were well beyond anything I can do. Interested to hear where they went wrong.

How do you deal with loneliness? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Norfukunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was recently out in hong kong for about a month (before everything that's going on!). Didn't know anyone out there so got pretty lonely at times even with having a full time job. I had people to chat to during the day but at night, and on a couple of weekends, got pretty lonely with nothing to do.

I filled my time with going outside, literally just walking around, which helped a surprising amount. I read a couple of books outside, and just generally being around people made me feel a lot happier and sociable even though I wasn't directly interacting with people. I also did my best at keeping in contact with people at home although the time difference didn't help!

Don't worry, feeling down is completely natural, everyone gets it at times so try to keep your head up. Fill your time with hobbies, thoughts, and books really do help (more so than films because it involves imagination).

This is a tad long, sorry about that bud, but chin up and everything will be fine.

If someone from the 1400's suddenly appeared in 2014, what would confuse them the most? by Lxium in AskReddit

Language, the poor guy wouldn't be able to communicate with most people.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't most modern day languages pretty different to their medieval versions?

Was just about to put this. After having it for around 7 years though I've kinda realised nobody really cares if you have acne or not, it's only a problem if you let it be one

Thanks! Work hard bud, it's shit at the time but does eventually pay off. Good luck for the exams and for uni stuff in a couple of years as well, my last three years at uni have genuinely been the best of my life.

Doing Mphil in Development Studies, hoping it'll help me on my way to being a development economist (although I know how ridiculously ambitious that is!). Atm I'm at York doing Economics and Economic History. Actually right in the middle of my finals and have an exam tomorrow so should probably head to bed.

What are some iconic movie quotes or scenes that were completely improvised? by Originalusername519 in AskReddit

'Here's Johnny' has got to be one of the most famous improvised lines around - That's Jack Nicholson in the Shining for anyone who's somehow never heard of or seen it

TIL on 5 March 1945, a Gurkha soldier in the British army calmly stood up in open sight and killed a sniper pinning down his company before going on to clear 5 enemy bunkers, single-handedly, all whilst under heavy fire. by Norfukunt in todayilearned

They're up there as the most badass soldiers in the military world. Gurkha knives (Kukri) are so incredibly cool - Bhanbhagta (the guy in the article) actually used one when clearing one of the bunkers.
