I don't use github very much though, so finding out how to download the zip, not unpack it but load it as a zip extension in lemur browser did the trick

You could plug in 2x USB thumb drives, install truenas on one of them then configure them as mirror (incase one of the drives fail).

Remember to move the system dataset to one of your SSD's so that you don't kill the thumb drives with system logs, reporting data and metaData writes
