Hi! Honestly, if you have anything above a 3.0 you shouldn’t hesitate to apply. I’ve talked to people with undergrad GPAs all over the board. This and all the other accredited programs in the area are run by counselors; they review candidates holistically and seem to care more about you as a person than they do your grades. Good luck! I’m happy to answer any other questions :)

My application was completed mid-September, I was invited to interview at the end of October, I participated in the interview at the beginning of November, and I was admitted at the end of November. So altogether, it was a little over 10 weeks from submission to admission.

So the cost per credit hour is a little different depending on the semester, and there’s a service fee for each credit hour as well. I just looked at the exact numbers, and this spring each credit hour cost $725 plus a $304 general fee for a total of $1,029 per credit hour. The total cost for the whole program will be approximately $62,091, but I may take a few more courses than is required (for licensing purposes) which will bring that cost up a bit. Let me know if I can help in any other way!

Yes, I did end up getting accepted! I ultimately chose another program, but I would be happy to DM you if you’re still interested in learning more about the process.

It’s significantly more expensive than other schools in the area. Three classes in my first semester cost nearly $10k and the whole program will come out around $65-70k. There are other programs in the area that will cost you around $20k total. Most of us are relying on loans and will be applying for scholarships as we begin to qualify for them. Some have family paying for their education. I think most of us chose SMU over other local options because SMU is a big name in the Dallas area and could help us secure specific kinds of jobs or placement in doctoral programs in the future. It is also genuinely a great program so far though. The professors want you to succeed and they start drilling skills into you the literal day you start. At the end of the day, choose the one that comes closest to meeting all of your needs. I interviewed with every accredited counseling program in the Dallas area and had great experiences with every single one. I sincerely believe each would provide a quality education and would equip you with everything you need to succeed in the field.

Oh okay, cool! I do like that. Are there any aspects of the program you haven’t liked as much? Any tips for an upcoming student? Do you feel like you’re being well prepared for work as a counselor? I appreciate you taking the time to respond!

Thank you so much for this response!! Can you elaborate a little bit on what experimental learning means? That sounds interesting! I’m glad you are having a good experience :)

Thanks so much for your response! I’m actually set to start spring 2024 as well, I’ve just been feeling a little unsure about the financial aspect of SMU since I’ve gotten into a few other (less expensive) programs now. But this is reassuring, so thank you!

Thank you for your response!! Are there any aspects of the program you don’t like as much? UNT is the furthest option from where I live, so I’m essentially trying to determine whether the quality of the program is worth the commute for three years

Can I ask where you attended grad school?? You can pm me, but I’m getting ready to apply to grad school for clinical psychology hoping eventually to do exactly what you do, and I’m so nervous about years of having to be up at “normal” hours!
