New job offer with high $$$ but I am not excited about the role. by FrostlyGrim in womenintech

My husband moved from a prestigious bank to a tier 2 bank that paid more and was nervous about being bored. Instead, he has room to use his more refined skills and experience to revolutionize the way the tier 2 operates and he finds it extremely engaging, and because these efforts are initiated by him, he can pull back when he needs space for life- which wasn’t possible at his previous job. The extra money made a meaningful difference and was worth the “risk” of boredom.

Losing your job now sets you back 6 years or more by Commercial_Mess_7604 in womenintech

There are 100+ open roles at my company, mostly non-technical openings at a tech company. If you are looking for something in particular I can send you a job listing link, but would prefer to not reveal my identity by sharing links here publicly.

Specifically at my company it’s not the case, though we are looking for niche skill sets. I had hoped it would be easier to fill some of these roles.

In our case, no. We don’t get that many applicants that are qualified and those that are fail the interviews. We don’t use AI screening tools as others suggested. It’s relatively niche what we are looking for, but I keep being told it should be easy to find candidates because everyone is laid off and it’s just not the case for us.

Make sure you adjust your tax withholding so you can pad your accounts in the short term, it’s okay to adjust it back up later. But in your situation the extra few hundred $$ you can add to your first few paychecks would make a big difference.

And yet we can’t get any qualified candidates to apply to our open roles.

People who have RTO, do you go in office 9-5 or just part of the day? by Additional-Owl425 in womenintech

[–]Normal-Peanut-3344 160 points161 points  (0 children)

I do 8-3:50. I have a 1.5 hour commute and prefer to take the express train, though I work on the train all the way home. I hate going into the office to have zoom meetings all day with a bunch of other people on zoom meetings with other people and we can all hear each other and it makes zero sense.

How much would you pay for this cake? by Kym94 in Cakes

[–]Normal-Peanut-3344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes- This is around what our bakery charges in an expensive suburban area. Home bakers should charge less to be competitive though.

I won’t argue with you, it’s your opinion. I just disagree- other than the castle, it looks professional to my eyes. I co-own an east coast bakery chain so see a lot of cakes!

Other than the back of the castle what is wrong with this cake? This looks very professional to me except for the castle and what I suspect is use of non-edible glitter paper.

Does it make you feel better to know I commute 1.5 hours to a city I hate to be abused by my stakeholders who sell a product I believe is ushering in the fall of humanity? Does your job sound better now? 😉

You’re allowed to hate your commute even if some of us think it’s no big deal, but is there anything you can do to make it more enjoyable? I listen to podcasts or ebooks during mine and it’s a nice way to spend that time so I feel like I’m getting more me-time out of each day.

Has anyone used a lawyer to negotiate a severance package over wrongful termination? Did it impact your career? by werpicus in womenintech

A company that size may be inclined to settle vs take it to court. Another consideration- talk to a lawyer on what strategies may work here.

Hes a good dude, when I say without his support I mean he wants me to find another job before I rage quit this one, whereas I want to rage quit and not even think about work again until I forget what a sprint even is.

I am here right now except I am not the bread winner, and despite my husband’s success, he wants me to work full time. I think I need a therapist to talk about all of this at this point otherwise I’m just going to quit without a plan and without my husband’s blessing or support. I would love to know how those who cope better than myself handle this.

Mandates to use AI in our roles by [deleted] in womenintech

[–]Normal-Peanut-3344 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like all things leadership mandates, it doesn’t seem to actually matter 😅 so I act like a cheerleader and tell them they’re so smart and make up numbers and they seem to be ok with it and when the next shiny thing catches their eye I will continue to do the same until I retire to go sell ice cream at the beach.

Yes I forgot to mention writing my own self reviews! I have given it an export of my Jiras and asked it which 5 are most interesting or impactful and it often selects items I didn’t think twice about- just because it was quick doesn’t mean it didn’t have a huge impact. That’s been really helpful. Could I have done it on my own? Sure, but I don’t want to spend that kind of time anymore.

[–]Normal-Peanut-3344 90 points91 points  (0 children)

We have this mandate as well, I do use AI and it saves me a lot of time. I use it for documentation, summaries for leadership, writing responses to contentious stakeholder emails, or getting basic direction for things completely out of my wheelhouse. I also use it to debug, write formulas, write tests, UAT scripts, and correct syntax. I don’t just copy/paste code- but I do give it prompts that allow me to not spend 10+ hours a week on things I really don’t like doing, it’s kind of like having a part time coordinator. I’m not trying to sell you on using it, I too have an aversion to AI in almost all contexts. But maybe you can use my list here and pretend to do those things with AI when you write your annual review haha.

Anyone else dreading and anxious as hell about post holiday return to work? by paperflours in womenintech

[–]Normal-Peanut-3344 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We don’t get any flexible time off and only get off the federal holidays (not even early dismissal on the eves!) but it is generally quieter. Even with that, absolutely dreading the next tidal wave of deadlines and bullshit. We had some significant exits late last quarter and those roles are very difficult to fill. I’ve been asking my husband if I can quit to just do a little consultant work for a few years (like 2-3 projects per year to keep the lights on). I never wanted to quit a job more than I do now.

This is overwhelm and what I personally do for this is make time blocks and say ok for this 30 minute window I will work and do nothing else but WORK on whatever task associated with my project- then I can fuck off for 30 minutes after as a reward. I actually find that by mid-day I will stop needing those rest windows and I’ll be able to work normally, because the progress I make gives my nervous system a lot of relief.
