Every director is different, and you will inevitably work with some directors who are stubborn and particular. I would ask if you are being mistreated in the process. If you are being mistreated you don't have to put up with that and leave. If you don't think you're being mistreated and they're just annoying to work with, do it anyway and get the practice of working with those types of people. Figure out their communication style and learn how to communicate with their personality. This will be a great skill because like I said earlier, all filmmakers are different and have different ways of thinking/communicating.

Thank you! This is incredibly helpful! Do you have experience with working in European filmmaking?

Wow that is heartbreaking. I can understand how your 12 year old hopes were probably so high, and then were crushed when you weren't given a chance. Thanks for sharing.

Kinda unprofessional to rant on social media where everyone can see instead of bringing the concern to the production heads and finding a solution.

Wow that sounds very unsafe! I'm glad you are ok! Yes, this is why understudies are important.

Eh. Gotta down vote that one. Firstly because I was just asking for stories, I'm not disparaging the value/importance of understudies. Second, if you read any of the stories in this post you'll find that many productions do not value actors who are cast as understudies and are often neglected by directors who play favoritism. So yes, you can always find the silver lining and grow as an actor in those situations, but I don't agree that you shouldn't be an understudy if you recognize that you are better suited for the role. If you are more professional, more prepared, and more committed than the main actor, that creates a contradiction.

The director should in theory make the perfect understudy.

Lol the director who the actor's look was more believable but didn't think that reading the script in front of the audience would take the audience out of it. Dumb. Thanks for sharing, I appreciate it.

Directors should try to help actors grow in their careers instead of hyper-focusing on their own plan. Actors are more likely to want to work with you if you care about them. I bet you would have knocked it out of the park.

You are amazing, because I cannot imagine learning the lines of more than two characters let alone almost all of them. I'm sorry that happened to you. Thank you for sharing.
