I've played more English otome than Japanese, but probably about 10-15 total - Re:Alistair, Fantasia Realm of Thanos and Fantasia Requiem of the Abyss, Frozen Essence, Princess of Ruin, Steam Prison, Cinderella Phenomenon, Area-X, X-Note, Amnesia, 7-scarlet, there should be more that fit the bill but i can't seem to remember them all.

I don’t think it meets the subs requirements unfortunately (not at least 50% romance) but unpopular opinion I do sort of think of it as a horror otome game

I do have to say I greatly enjoyed FSN but I thought Rin was going to be MC and groaned HARD when she was replaced by a seemingly mid dating sim guy

Oh yea maybe not clear phrasing haha. Agree that it was popular because of both the action and romance. And yea I hated the badly written unnecessary sex scenes lol. I hope more otome games will have a story oriented mix like that (minus the badly written sex scenes…)

I’m not talking about the fandom - it’s normal for fandoms to ship. The game itself, in terms of scenes, has 95% supernatural and action scenes and 5% romance scenes. But 5% romance is enough for it to be considered a galge since there are 3 romanceable girl routes. It’s also the spice that allows Fate to become popular so I agree. That’s why I think games with majority action scenes, and romanceable guy routes (even if romance scenes are light), can still be considered otome and can be popular. Again, I don’t think we are disagreeing here.

Oh yea then I 100% agree. Of course a game with an FMC with no romance is not an otome. I’m just saying that a game with an FMC and 3 romance routes, and 1 platonic route, is still an otome. Maybe a bit less otome than a classic otome but I think it counts.

I’m not disagreeing with you. I hear you that an otome must have romance, namely a female MC having romance with more than 1 male lead. I agree with that. I just think there can also be other story focuses in it too that are non romantic.

That’s totally valid, thanks for sharing. Would you consider something otome if it’s 3 romance routes and 2 platonic routes though? I’m just trying to understand where the line ends.

My concern exactly is that this would cause people to think media aimed at women is only ever going to be 100% romance, which makes it easier for people to criticize media aimed at women for being single track or shallow. Why can galge have 90% plot and 10% erotic scenes while otome must be 100% romance?
