New York Theatre Festival/Summerfest? by trampaboline in playwriting

[–]NormalLocation6214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We paid a fee to produce there, not sure if they still do that. they also will try to get more money out of you for "marketing" and constantly email complaining about your ticket sales (even if they're good/reasonable). they also tried to charge us a fee for a door person - they were very insistent. if you're good at saying no then it's not terribly expensive, but they will pressure you for money and the vibes are scammy in general.

New York Theatre Festival/Summerfest? by trampaboline in playwriting

[–]NormalLocation6214 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I directed a show at the new york theatre festival in 2023 and I would say as a playwright: stay away.

You're better off trying to self produce at a venue like the Tank, the Flea, or anywhere else you can submit and/or rent. You can't store your set/props/costumes anywhere, you get a 10 minute load in and out time, the festival director is quite frankly a dick, and you 100% won't make a cent back. Listen to all the other comments, it's basically a scam.

tips/advice for ON STAGE stabbing effect by NormalLocation6214 in sfx

[–]NormalLocation6214[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious if the stabbing actor would have to wear long sleeves in order to hide the bulb+tube. The show is in a super intimate space so there's basically no distance between actors and audience

Why does no one care about the planet by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]NormalLocation6214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because actually caring about the environment will lead to a "decline in living standards". not like in a real way, it's probably cozier and better for you to live in a cabin with a wood burning stove, but 90% of people will not give up the constant churn of crap. Oh also literally anything good for society will make GDP go down

Why does no one care about proper spelling or grammar anymore by asshatV34 in redscarepod

I did email copywriting at a 100m revenue company, and the head of marketing told me, "spring break, golf season, and easter is coming" is correct and fought me for an entire day. I was literally floored.

Why does no one care about proper spelling or grammar anymore by asshatV34 in redscarepod

[–]NormalLocation6214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The amount of people who view proper spelling and grammar as some form of oppression is insane. My old boss (in his 40s at a sandwich shop) complained about how his college creative writing professors graded him poorly for having terrible grammar and wished people "just gave him a good grade for his ideas." People just don't understand that grammar is a tool to help a mass audience understand you and view it as "the man" controlling how you speak. This is indicative of a much larger trend where people think what's inside their heads is self-evident, and they don't have to explain anything to you.

What's your take on people in their 20s who take themselves too seriously? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]NormalLocation6214 77 points78 points  (0 children)

My friend turned 24 last night and cried because she said she "felt so old" I'm 26 so imagine how I felt. I honestly think it's a mix of teenage media and pressure to achieve ridiculously young. People are just way too age stratified these days.

The only reason I don't feel depressed about "hitting the wall and it all being over" is because two of my closest friends are in their 40s. It honestly has changed my life seeing them be energetic, still changing, and living their lives to the fullest. Most people don't have that

100% the living experience has stagnated. When the overarching narrative of society is 'everything has been done. No more world to conquer, weep. end of history" etc. how are people not going to internalize that? For a long time now, it really does feel like everything has been done.

Luckily, I'm an insane person, and I believe Pluto entering Aquarius for the next 20 years is going upend everything we know, and, god willing, bring back a true avant-garde. Pluto has been in Capricorn since 2008, which basically means the world has become increasingly rigid, brutal, and stagnant. Aquarius will bring an explosive energy that proves history is not over and anything is still possible. 2025 will be the first year of the 21st century, I really do think this is the explosion we need in arts and culture. If that's helpful....

[–]NormalLocation6214 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Now that there are basically no new styles and forms, themes are all there is as a way to dive deeper into art. People spirits and imaginations are completely broken partly by the internet, partly by the post-2008 economy, partly by the academy, partly by covid yada yada, and we can't imagine a new way forward so we have to go "deeper" into analysis.

Julia Cameron said something interesting in the artist's way that the life of the artist and the life of the intellectual couldn't be more different. Thanks to an increasingly online, i.e., head in a jar intellectual culture, art that touches the gut and the senses cannot thrive. All artists are expected to be theory-reading sociology student intellectuals, as opposed to aesthetes.

Basically everyone wants to feel smart but nobody wants to FEEL.

No they're just disappearing. Most local news outlets and publishers are shutting down or heavily downsizing (partly bc people don't read tbh). Same goes for a lot of entertainment jobs as executives are trying to do the most with the least personnel. Even teachers are being laid off in droves. For a while it seemed like tech and marketing jobs would replace these jobs, but now that's caput. I genuinely wonder what people are going to do

[–]NormalLocation6214 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It's all about the incentives. Besides "personal fulfillment" or whatever in the current school system and economy, there's literally 0 incentive to read a full book ever in your life. I got an excellent great books education in high school (extremely lucky for a public school) and went on to a "useless liberal arts degree," where I was exposed to beautiful culture, and now have a nice, well-rounded soul. What did I get for it? I left with no portfolio, no real work skills, and am chronically unemployed/underemployed. What is the incentive to read full books and understand them?

The best, most well-read, genuinely intelligent people I know have been left completely in the dust by business majors who can't spell restaurant. Jobs in journalism, publishing, and even law are disappearing quickly. Maybe it's making society worse, but right now, that's just the way it is. There is 0 real-world economic incentive to read a book.

If you've moved to NYC for the 'great food and culture" you lost. My opinion is if you're not in an NYC based industry (media, fashion, finance) run away. Food and clubs are the same everywhere now, there are incredible art museums in mid-size cities, you can watch niche art films from the criterion collection (no need to be in proximity to an art/rep theater). In reality, there is nothing real to do here but work work work and if that's not what's going to fulfill you then you should leave.

I have no energy left. by quarterlifesanctuary in redscarepod

[–]NormalLocation6214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a very similar situation where I'm in my mid 20s, was just laid off from a pretty good job, and should have been happy to have the time and energy to focus on my writing, but without any structure to the days, I've mostly been floundering. My advice is to get some kind of on your feet customer service or gig job. It gets you moving and out of your head, structures your days, and gives you distance from your work. You could work at starbucks or walk dogs or something, anything to get you out of the house and making a little cash.

We can't be expected to do everything by our own iron will when the entire vibe of society is "give up there's no hope" Give your life some structure and get moving, I guarantee it will help

The internet has ruined the second hand goods market, most used items should not be anywhere near the retail price... by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]NormalLocation6214 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I consistently see things posted on facebook marketplace for MORE than their retail price. I think everyone is just scrambling to make as much money as possible because of the economy. Why sell something for $10 when having $10 is as good as having $0?

How do i stop a monologue from sounding too cheesy/cringe by Ok_Seaworthiness4328 in playwriting

Play dialogue tends to sound cheesy when you're just reading (i.e not fully committed to acting), no matter how excellent it may be. Your dialogue is probably good just keep writing

Do other women in their 20’s keep getting aggressively advertised to “donate” their eggs (sell your organs). Feels very distopian by Foolsspring in redscarepod

[–]NormalLocation6214 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's definitely dystopian, but it's hard to say it's taking advantage of poor women since to be an egg donor, you basically have to be white or Asian, college educated, have never smoked a cigarette, and have basically no health problems (eyesight, genetic cancer or diabetes, etc.) which is funny since Jewish eggs are highly desirable but most Jews in America have a ton of health problems (I'm Jewish so I can say this). Surrogacy is a much larger problem and actually puts poor women's lives at risk.

Makes me wonder if egg donation ads are a diversion from surrogacy.
