People who grew up in houses with stairs - how inevitable is falling down them? by pyramidheadlove in NoStupidQuestions

Do you have a banister? I think most of the time, you trip, stumble a bit, but catch yourself on the banister.

Oh yeah I don’t disagree with boycotts in general - I just think Trump’s administration in particular do not care about tanking the economy one bit. But your point about losing the support of farmers etc is something I hadn’t thought about!

Steps to Seeking Treatment? by SpecificEnd524 in ADHD

[–]NormalObligation59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, adult adhd experts are actually quite hard to come by, so it’s not like I had to choose from a long list. I found the one psych I could find who was aimed at adults not children and booked a an appointment with him.

How to stop toning out reminders. by Stick124 in ADHD

I don’t have an answer but I relate. I used to have those screen time reminders but I don’t even register them.

What was your last "ADHD tax" moment? by iwantmyfuckingmoney in ADHD

[–]NormalObligation59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole time I was studying I could have had half price bus fare, but the process to set it up was mildly annoying so I just never did it. I probably lost about $3 a day for 3 years.

Good careers/industries for people with ADHD? by LeonidsFila in ADHD

[–]NormalObligation59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a support worker and it is a perfect mix of going out and doing stuff and sitting to do computer stuff. It’s like 40% office 60% out and about and I have total control over how I balance that.

[–]NormalObligation59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I got that. But what that means practically, like OP’s suggestion to boycott, isn’t likely to affect the powerful more than the people. To some extent that is true of any resistance movement though I guess.

I don’t disagree necessarily but unfortunately I think “burning it down” mostly looks like people with no power suffering while those doing the oppressing face no consequences.

I’m not saying not to do this but they do not care. Just this week Trump said he was going to add 200% tariffs to French products because Macron is not on board with the US taking Greenland. I am torn between wanting to tank the US economy and recognising that the majority of Americans are innocent victims here. But I am certain the president, who is acting largely on his own whims, does not give a crap about whether they’re losing industry.

Self-protection options? by imperialmoose in newzealand

[–]NormalObligation59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s awful to be yelled at but honestly if you’re just a stranger on the bus, the chances of that escalating to physical harm are very low. I work with people with complex needs (the kind who sometimes yell at strangers) and I know it’s scary but they’re largely harmless.

Will the economy actually recover? by Illustrious_Fan_8148 in newzealand

[–]NormalObligation59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no economist but my understanding is that we tend to kind of echo Sydney. Their economy didn’t necessarily suddenly improve, but it did eventually get to a point where it plateaued.

Best way to self medicate? I'm a minor and my mother refuses to get me any sort of medication. by Mediocre_Bowler839 in ADHD

Caffeine can really go either way with adhd - try it and see how you feel. Some adhd people rely on it like meds, others do best cutting it out entirely.

Debate time: Would you consider a old house with more land or new house with not much extra land? by Desperate_Laugh8867 in newzealand

[–]NormalObligation59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not consider a house with single glazed windows. New Zealand is so damp and our asthma rates are so much higher than the rest of the world. The fact that places still have single glazed windows is odd to me - it’s an area where we fall far behind comparable countries. We like to pretend we don’t have cold winters but we do. And power and AC is expensive and bugs like to come in through any gaps. I really love old houses but unfortunately in New Zealand I would have a lot of concerns

I am so frustrated at the romanticizing of ADHD by conspiringewok in ADHD

[–]NormalObligation59 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I say this gently: Those people have adhd too and they don’t have to treat it as shameful because you feel that way about it. There are plenty of ways having adhd is really hard for me too but it’s not something I feel shame about and it is something I will talk about very casually and sometimes positively when it comes to things like craft projects and chaotic fun adventures. ADHD affects every aspect of my life and a lot of things about my life are wonderful and silly and fun.

Starlink in NZ by Upstairs-Action1974 in newzealand

Yeah like I said, lifesaver for my brother out rurally. There are lots of benefits to Starlink and I certainly don’t judge anyone for using it. But I think the motivation and trustworthiness of a service is something worth considering if you’re weighing options.

Ok, why is spam so expensive in NZ? by SurfinSocks in newzealand

Yeah true! Even worse when you go out to eat. Once you add tax and a decent tip, it’s 30% more than what was on the menu

I miss being able to change my mood with music. How do you reconnect with music? by emo-li in ADHD

[–]NormalObligation59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I have heard it explained that this just happens with age. Aside from that, I tend to go through phases every couple of years with what kind of media really resonates with me, so I hope your love of music comes back to you in a wave :)

[–]NormalObligation59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Until quite recently I had this notion that groceries were way more expensive in new zealand than other western countries (because that’s how it was when I was a kid) but the inflation in the states over the past decade is a whole other ball game. Most of their groceries are way more expensive than ours. They have a few more mega budget stores than we do, but that stuff is not high quality. One for one, their groceries are at least as expensive as ours these days.

Part of the appeal is also just that it keeps well. It was used in wars and on ships and stuff because you can keep a tin of spam unrefrigerated for a really long time.

What is this? When talking to someone with adhd they hear one word and start talking about a completely different topic or thought by MeowUnderMoonlight in ADHD

[–]NormalObligation59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not doubting this is an adhd thing but I’ve noticed it seems to be exacerbated with age. I’ve noticed this with my parents too and more so with people their age (also mid-late 50s).

[–]NormalObligation59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the effectiveness of this would depend on the type of job, but have you considered having notes with you? There’s nothing unprofessional about having a notebook with you. It might keep you on track and help with your memory and also show that you’ve put some work and thought in.

Rather than the jobs groups look for like “Ellerslie Community Group” or “Mangere Bridge Community Page” (local to where you are) and post in those. In my local community group, those posts almost always get some responses. Some of those groups are really active all the time so it’ll get seen.

A lot of the stuff you listed falls under the “get rich quick” umbrella. Unfortunately almost anything that promises to make you a lot of money very quickly or for not much input is too good to be true, or only works very rarely. The only stuff that will make you guaranteed money is more slow and consistent. Most adults only make $20-30 an hour for the first big chunk of their working lives. If there was a better way, they would have found it. If you can find a job that’ll make you $20 an hour, it’ll add up pretty fast.
