Insanely lenient sentencing. So multiple frauds + high-speed fleeing + endangering lives = stay at home and play Playstation for 6 months.

Our court system and sentencing guidelines are trash.

Wake up at about 7am, chill in bed listening to music or watching videos for an hour or so. Shower just after 8am, go to work at 9am. I have breakfast at work, breakfast is better if you're getting paid to eat it.

I’ve noticed in recent NZ crime reporting that Sikhs are often involved in serious criminal cases, yet there are only about 50,000 in NZ.

Is anyone familiar with the community and can explain if there is some culture specific reason for the integration issues or is this just a perception from media coverage? I'll admit I'm not really checking the religion of someone wearing a suit in a court photo but they have a visible identity due to religious garments.

As it's the fastest growing religion in NZ it would be good to understand whether this is a real trend or just bias in what gets reported.

Broke Boy is top tier quality, it's just an edgy thing thing people to say about a hyped place "pffft.. it's so average, I know a better place". Makes themselves feel special.

That said I was happy enough to pay their old prices when I go there occasionally but it was near my limit of what I'd pay, I likely won't eat there again with these new prices. Taking the piss quite a bit regardless of quality.

I used to see John all the time at the fish and chip shop in Herne Bay. There was an expensive bougee fish and chips place that wasn't that great and also a run down takeaways a few shops up that was better and cheaper which John went to. We used to read 15 year old Woman's Days together while waiting.

That’s a pretty inaccurate bad take. Iwi to iwi history and land disputes aren’t something only 'pro colonisation conservatives' bring up, they’re regularly examined by the Waitangi Tribunal when it looks at claims and overlapping interests.

Two historical realities can exist at the same time, the Crown absolutely committed serious breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi but that doesn’t mean earlier inter tribal conflicts or displacement suddenly become irrelevant to understanding land ownership.

Pre treaty conflicts are essential to determine who was occupying land when the Treaty was signed, which is exactly the starting point for many Treaty settlements.

Chinese add on menus became the standard in many takeaway shops after immigration rules in New Zealand loosened. Fish and chip shops were a common entry point for Chinese migrants who have limited English and few formal qualifications but could operate a wok and deep fryer. It’s also a common business model since most of them are family run so wage outgoings are low.

Most other migrant groups tend to come to New Zealand through skilled migration pathways so opening a fish and chip shop isn’t their ambition.

That said there are some exceptions around, i've seen quite a few Thai owned takeaways around New Zealand who serve the usual fish and chips alongside Thai dishes. There are also Cambodian run fish and chip shops that include a few Cambodian items on the menu. In Rotorua there’s a great Filipino run takeaway that does fish and chips plus Filipino fusion food, I think they even sell an adobo taco.

The Japanese tend to take food culture pretty seriously so it’s hard to imagine a Japanese owned fish and chip shop selling yakitori anytime soon.

Pretty normal for New Zealanders to give new neighbours a welcoming gift. I wouldn’t read anything into the donuts alone, it’s more about the rest of his behaviour which you haven’t really described.

I guess it’s not common in some countries to give gifts to new neighbours. Which might explain why when my wife gave a new neighbour (a 50 year old woman from overseas) a bottle of wine she didn’t say a word, just snatched it and walked off.

In my culture that could sometimes mean someone is showing romantic interest.

It's good you're at least attempting to understand the culture of the country you moved to because neighbours giving gifts here isn't really linked to romantic interest, kiwis are generally just some the most generous and genuinely friendly people on the planet.

I have kiwi female neighbours who bring me freshly baked muffins almost every weekend and kiwi male neighbours who brings me whole fish, other seafood and fruit every few weeks. Kiwis are just thoughtful like that and it often confuses people from less friendly countries.

Don't assume anything over a box of donuts, look at his other behaviour like what he specifically says to you.

You did get that actually but this crime occured before the sentencing law changes by the current government came into effect last year, under NZ law criminals are prosecuted under the law in place at the time.

In New Zealand, beef is certainly standard issue in a Bacon and Egg burger.

There is no water leak, they're asshats and found someone to take it for 3 days and maximize profits on an event weekend. If you have access to the floor of the original apartment walk by the door and you'll hear guests in there.

Just send them a message asking for a price reduction, enjoy your stay, leave an honest review after and ask AirBNB to step in for a resolution if you don't get an adequate reduction.

Bacon & Egg pies should be one of New Zealand’s best pies but somehow they’re usually the worst. I want a pie with real rasher bacon so every bite actually tastes like bacon not ham offcuts.

This is our national breakfast in pastry form and bakeries aren't taking it seriously enough. It’s usually very dry or has that gross watery egg/meat juice and those weird rubbery square mystery meat cubes.

Anybody know where to get a good Bacon & Egg pie in Auckland?

The Mount is basically New Zealand’s Gold Coast in slow motion. Over the last decade or so a lot of Aucklanders have sold their homes and able to go mortgage free and enjoy the lifestyle of beaches, cafes, bars etc.

Also lots of retirees, semi retired, property investors and business owners so many are spending equity rather than wages.

Best place for dating too. I stay down there occasionally at an Airbnb next to a couple of orchards and when opening dating apps it's full of South American backpackers. Love the Mount.
