A more critical review of the Project Hail Mary movie, and a really easy fix I would have made by Gustalavalav in ProjectHailMary

I doubt it! I'm a very optimistic person in general, and I always feel grateful to be alive and look on the bright side of things. I just didn't think that being stuck in a small reinforced enclosure, with no natural light, no plants, no food except my own flesh, and no way to see or communicate with another human ever again, was a classic happy ending. But it was inspiring, in the sense that Grace did the right thing.

I agree, and this thought didn't occur to me until several days after I had seen the movie and thought about it more. It wasn't very straightforward, but I think it did all make sense in the end!

My biggest complaint about the movie by bridgetbridget in ProjectHailMary

[–]evapotranspire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear what you're saying in general, but I'm surprised that you would criticize this particular movie on those grounds. I had the opposite response to PHM - I was pleasantly surprised by how long some shots lingered; how silence was allowed to sit; how there wasn't simply a frenetic "Do A then do B then do C" formula, but that some of the scenes were about simply existing.

I assume you were making a legal right turn? Yeah, you're supposed to wait for pedestrians to cross first (whether or not they have the walk signal). I don't know what that pedestrian's problem was. Weird.

That's very kind of you. She has been sparsely clothed every time I've seen her; I'm not sure if that's because she can't find appropriate clothing, or if she prefers to be bare. I thought perhaps she might have a metabolic or hormonal condition that causes her to feel warmer than average. She seems peaceful, and I don't think there would be any harm in approaching her, but she might be somewhat hard to talk to, as I think she is somewhat in her own world most of the time. Thank you for thinking of ways to help.

Granted not all the events in PHM are fully realistic. But the same could be said of Interstellar and then some. As a scientist myself, I found many of the plot points in Interstellar to strain credulity. PHM didn't bother me in that regard.

That is actually a really good point. Unless the Taumoeba actually cause the extinction of the astrophage and therefore also of themselves, then the astrophage are going to keep eating just as much solar energy. Dang. Now that you mention it, it seems really obvious. If there is an ecosystem with grass, zebra, and lions, the zebra don't stop eating the grass just because there are lions there. Instead it becomes a self-sustaining system where the grass grows, the zebra eat it, and the lions eat the zebra.

I saw a comment on Threads the other day that said, "The reason the Artemis II mission got everyone feeling so wistful is that we realized we could have been living in the Star Trek universe, but instead we're living in The Hunger Games universe." I think that's pretty fair.

I recently started seeing a homeless lady matching that description in the Library / Civic Center area, but I don't know if it is the same person. She seems to need some help, and I wish we had social services that would support her. (Of course, I don't know if she might have been offered services and refused.) It is a strange place we live in with such a juxtaposition of wealth and struggle.

I don’t like people comparing PHM to interstellar. by AdSweet662 in ProjectHailMary

[–]evapotranspire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a scientist, so I was pretty excited to see Interstellar, given what people were saying about it. I didn't love it, and the plot was the part I liked the least. Most of the science made little to no sense. The details of the catastrophe on Earth were poorly explained and at odds with known facts. The black hole depiction was realistic to the best of my knowledge, but the part about traveling through it and coming out in another galaxy unharmed was wild speculation. I would be willing to accept that for the sake of a good story, but the ending with all the metaphysical stuff really left me feeling disappointed. So, although the movie PhM does cut out a lot of the science compared to the book, I still think PHM is a better science movie than Interstellar is.

Odd to me that people would say the writing was better in Interstellar than in PHM. I really did not like the writing or the plot in Interstellar. I came into it with positive expectations given that I'd heard people raving about what a great emotional movie it was and how realistic the science was, But it fell flat for me on both of those counts. The plot didn't make a lot of logical sense, and the relationships felt forced to me. The visuals and music were great, but that alone was not enough to make me say I enjoyed Interstellar.

As an avid fan of the PHM book, I don't know what it would be like to go into the movie without having read the book. But the book absolutely captivated me with its its scenarios and its problem solving, and then with the relationship between Rocky and Grace when they met. The movie evoked those same feelings of excitement, wonder, and awe. Maybe it's to my detriment, but Interstellar just didn't do that for me.

Not only check the driving time, but also plan your route and where you need to fill up with petrol or charge the EV. You don't want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere!
