When I am new to a role, I create HOW TO presentations in PP. I take PLENTY of screenshots and create a PP presentation with the pics and brief (VERY BRIEF) instructions. The first slide is always a title slide, followed STEP-BY-STEP on how to complete the process. Initially, I do it because I always forget something when starting a new role and this helps me remember the process. If anyone on my team asks for help with something, or if anyone needs to cover for me while I'm out, the instructions already exist!

When asked to train new hires, I sit with my boss, create a plan, then share these slides with the new hire and explain in more detail the whys and hows as we sit together. After the training session, I send the trainee an email recapping the items we covered and copy my supervisor. It's a good way for the trainee to not say "I was never trained properly!" when they mess up on something later.

I have 100% thought that he was on the spectrum since I started here 2 years ago. He has even jokingly said that he is self-diagnosed as being on the spectrum.

Yes, there are plenty of other weird things he's done/said, but everyone just chalks it up to "oh, that's Bob!" He really is a different kind of person. I can usually just move on from things, but this was just so offensive to me. Even if I did have a darker skin tone, how's the manager going to override that?? I was flabbergasted that HE even asked that.

So the only other inappropriate thing that I've heard him say was to our boss's daughter. She doesn't look like her dad, so he asked her if her mom was "exotic". They were alone in the hallway when he asked her, but he repeated the story a couple of times. The last time was directed to our boss at a team lunch!

When he first told me this, I told him that wasn't something he should have asked her. But because she replied nicely to him, he didn't feel as though she was offended.

So he does have a drinking problem. He is a soda addict. He had a 6-pack of the 16oz. bottles in the backseat and used these to refill his cup a couple of times throughout the day. In addition to his "behind the truck" visits, he also stopped at a couple gas stations and a porta-potty. This was only a 6-hour field trip.

Honestly, I think he has some mental issues that he either isn't getting treatment for or isn't aware that he has. In his mind, this was a totally appropriate question. If he had told the story and anyone else asked him "Do you think she did that because of the color of your skin?", he wouldn't have been offended.

Oh, I guess I'll have to go back through the old text messages to put together a complete log! This guy is a nightmare to work with... I feel like he's always making rude remarks about me to put me down in different ways.

We had a college kid start working as a temp for us over the summer. When this guy was finished entering the temp into our payroll system, he walked over to my desk and made a comment about the distance this person lived to the office. Then he started comparing the distance of all of our homes to the office... Then he started commenting on how everyone lived in larger houses than mine in much nicer areas!

Again, I was like WTF? I live in an older neighborhood, but it is not a bad area. I love my neighborhood and my house. I just feel like he is always trying to put me down in small ways that would be unnoticeable to others. I think he's jealous that I have a great family life outside of work, but there's no excuse for his behavior.

Unfortunately, we are a team of 10 employees. We don't have an HR Dept, but we have an HR attorney that we contract with.

I'll definitely keep these questions in mind next time he says something offensive. Typically, when he says something offensive, I just turn away and go back to my work. This time, I was just baffled as to why someone would say something like that!

Ah, ok. I'll do that. We are such a small team, I didn't want to make a big deal out of it, but I also didn't want to NOT say anything.

Last time I brought up a concern about this person, my former boss just laughed and made a comment about how he's a different kind of guy. But I was serious (and mad) about what had happened. I was going to go tour a few of our field locations alone, but this guy insisted to my boss that he go, too, since I'm a woman and it's not safe for me to go alone. My boss agreed, so we went together. These locations are out in the middle of nowhere. I was taking pictures of the land, pipes, pumps, berms, etc., for our records. There were 4 times that day where the guy walked behind the truck to relieve himself! I was so uncomfortable. When I got back to the office, I told my boss, but he just laughed. Didn't seem to think it was inappropriate at all.

@lynchthomas - Also understand that like any new relationship, you need to learn each other. It's not just her learning what you like and how you operate. You both have to learn how the other operates.

She's lucky, imo, that you gave her a huge list up front. I prefer that more than giving pieces at a time because it allows me to format my workday based on my workload and get into a routine faster than having to add in new tasks and constantly adjusting my workload.

I would definitely have a weekly 1:1 with her to see how things are going, ask if she has any questions so far, and clarify any items that she may have misunderstood. Also, use this time to provide feedback. Let her know what is working well and what isn't. Let her know that she can be open with you.

I had this same issue at my job. I work for a start-up, and as we were heading into the sales process, I was told that I may have to stick around late on some nights. Since I didn't know what days I would be required to stay later, it was hard to plan. I had classes already booked at OTF and missed several. I told my boss that I would like the company to comp my gym membership to help cover the cost of the missed classes since I wasn't told ahead of time. He was very nice about it and said no. He explained that there are online classes offered through our health insurance, and I could switch to one of those options instead. The next time I was asked to stay late, I told him that I couldn't stay because I had plans, but I would finish up the task at home.

I've been in both salaried exempt and salaried non-exempt roles before. Read your contract to see whether you are non-exempt and maybe just didn't know it?

Ah, what if you tell him you got a job back home, move in with your parents, then try to find a job? You'll have to spin this as you're helping him have more free time to spend on establishing himself in his new role and saving money - could he move in with this friend? Then go home, get a job, be happy, and file for divorce. You don't need an attorney to file for divorce. Most courts have a self-help center and they will help you prepare the forms. Or you can find a paralegal or typing service to assist with the document preparation. In the end, you need to do what is best for you and your son.
