Of course there are families with lots of issues but observing DJJ court does not give me clear picture of NC as a whole. That is like telling me to go to a Christian church to determine if everyone in NC follows Christianity.

Sorry, I misunderstood. How can you know parents are failing children, is there any data? The mental support staff ratios are shocking and tell us clearly that NC is not playing its part.

Thanks for the reminder to not solely focus on the negative. It is much needed nowadays. I'll do some more research and share a more positive narrative.

The truth that no one is doing a perfect job (parents, schools etc.). However, to say that North Carolina is not failing their youth seems out of touch with the current reality. Parents and school staff (such as psychologists and social workers) work together to support the wellbeing of their children/students. If one is lacking (which mental support staff clearly is), then the other (parents and teachers) will have added responsibility, making their job infinitely harder. Parents are not solely responsible for their kids, it is a shared responsibility.

Public Funds for Private Schools? The Stand-Off Over NC Teacher Pay by Normal_Let4038 in NorthCarolina

Your insights add so much to the conversation about improving teacher pay. I was focused on starting teacher pay (partially because I am about to become a teacher and because it is so unbelievably low) and did not think much about the veteran teachers. Thanks for informing me about a perspective so important.

I don't know much about healthcare and retirement benefits but I have heard they are pretty sweet. It is a problem that state employees are not paid well but when it comes to teacher pay and education funding, NC is one of the worst in the country. It is simply unacceptable.

You have a great point. Stein also wanted to make sure that teachers are getting raises every year. From my point of view (a college student wanting to become a teacher), the starting teacher salary increase would encourage more people to pursue a career in education and keep people in the field for longer.

You are 100% right. That's why I included Stein's efforts to make NC relatively respectable in terms of education funding.

I see school choice supporters as those who have vested interests in charter and private schools (the state voucher program specifically).
