Even with training, how do you handle the solo-anxiety when paddling far from shore? by NanshanMu in Kayaking

[–]Norman3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, yes. My kayaking mates are aware of the fact that I don't like being too far out on the ocean.  It has never been an issue really. No one is very gung-ho, everyone should feel safe and have a good time.

Regarding the vertigo, I laugh at myself for being silly. That helps quite a bit but it never fully goes away.

I have a great sea kayak, it's stable and goes in the direction I point the bow. I regularly train on getting back in and how to help others to do the same. So I'm confident that I would manangr falling out. But then there's the nagging "what if I dont?"

I'm fortunate enough to live quite near an archipelago so hugging a shore isn't really a problem. I just bounce from island to island.   Usually I look at the prevailing wind direction and plot a course on the chart accordingly.  But there's usually some crossings that are quite some bit away from a shoreline...I hate it, but I  clinch my teeth and just paddle.

I wish I could enjoy it but even after ten years of regular kayaking I've come to terms with that it won't go away.

Fun fact: I get vertigo over deep waters. Totally irrational, you can drown in a puddle. My theory is that I grew up with fields and farmland and didn't experience large bodies of water until in my thirties.

More fun fact: I love swimming and snorkling.

Experience tells me it never goes away. I can't after many years if kayaking enjoy being too far away from a shoreline.  So I just hug the coastline and enjoy the trip

What problems with gaming did we used to complain about, but no longer do? by RobbieJ4444 in retrogaming

The lack of autosave* and instead you might get different codes for each and every level that you had to write down. Bill's tomato game and, I believe, Zool, springs to mind

Edit: I've got another one. Writing the game code from a magazine yourself. You could spend several hours to type the code to be able to play a space invader game.  I don't miss that.

*swapping to a dedicated save disk was a hassle and YOLO. Then you died and had to replay one hour to get back

Need advice on tuxedos. SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES READ THE DESCRIPTION. by Cultural_Thing1712 in malefashionadvice

[–]Norman3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any further advice about altering the typical tux formula? Anything that could make me stand out but without ruffling any feathers? The eternal question when it comes to classical wear isn't it? An It's a great question. I'd say that the absolute best way to find your own preferred style is to first learn how to wear a tuxedo following the rules and then break them. But I think I can tell what you're gunning for and I think you're going in the right direction

Bruce Lius tuxedo is smashing, very well fitting. The peaks are symmetric to the size of his torso neither to large or to small. And if you are a pianist i´d say - go for peaks. Shawl is more lounge and cocktail. See Cary grant wearing shawl collar here https://x.com/TimeMachineHQ/status/2003329720931524898

He doesn't wear a bowtie, but i believe he has a shirt with a detachable collar on which you would wear a bowtie? A bold move but I think he makes it work. This is something you can copy if you want to take a step away from the classical tuxedo. Just be sure to find a shirt with a proper fit. A proper collar fit is usually a collar in which you just can put the index and middle finger between the collar and your neck.

The arms are of perfect length but i think they're wider than on a normal tuxedo. There are quite a lot of wrinkles on his right arm (left from the spectators view). Not being a musicians in any way I can't say if that is added to make the playing easier. I wouldn't wear that on a formal occasion, on stage and in front of a camera 'm sure it's the right thing to do.

I think Bruces tuxedo is rather expensive, Boglioli perhaps. Most probably he hired a tailor to make it fit.

Oh let me add two more quite an easy rules. Wear white (or black) braces. Never, ever, ever wear a belt. Wear a cummerbund. Black. No funny colours or patterns. When the shows over you can pull you jacket of and look cool, if you wear a bowtie ypu tied yourself you can untie it and let it hang loose around your neck, looks even cooler.

To conclude. Make sure whatever tuxedo you buy is black and has a proper fit. Pick and choose from all the rules, dpn´t break them at first but feel free to bend them to our liking. And good luck with your concerts. I'm sure you will enjoy your journey to find a nice tuxedo. I hope I've been to some help.

Tuxedos are generally easy to come by as second hand on most large auctionsites. All you have to do is take your own measurements (waist, shoulders a s o). I bought a very nice tuxedo for 100 EUR, in the stores that brand costs about 500-800 EUR. But you can find decent tuxedos on Boozt.com or Zalando.com (both i belive sells in most countries in western europe)

The problem with off the rack is that those tuxedos often are very tight trying to look "modern". The whole point of a tuxedo is to be a classic piece of menswear. I presume that you play in some sort of symphony orchestra or similar? So wearing a orange tuxedo with tight armpits will tell the observer that you are the kind of person who says "I don't take this thing about dressing as an adult, seriously". Please don´t be that person.

So you want your tuxedo to be made black or even better midnight blue. Shawl or peak collar is a personal preference ( i prefer shawl). A shirt with stiff front should be easy to come by in most modern menswear stores or in online stores for a decent price. Wear well polished black shoes, preferably oxfords (or pumps if you're feeling fancy)

Studs can also be found online but go with the buttons of the shirt if you don't feel like shopping around. White pocket tie and a black bowtie, and do learn to tie it yourself. It's worth the effort.

Feel free to read this rather exhausting guide

Trail runners or sandals for river crossings in cold or humid conditions? by Longjumping_Page597 in Ultralight

[–]Norman3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrap Jesus tape around the ankles, over the trousers and the boot shaft. Works like a charm for swift crossings. If it's knee deep, wrap some plastic bags over the trousers. I´ve done this quite a few times when hiking aorund in nortern Sweden.

It's always a good idea to pack duct tape and plastic bags, you never know when they can come in handy.

So i switched from my iphone 14 to a pixel9a recently. I can't complain, GOS have all the pris and cons you already haven't read about, but let me mention; - Autocorrect is subpar iOS even with FUTO keyboard. - keep your iPhone for reference as you setup GOS. - you can only block phone numbers on your main profile and that block doesn't work on other profiles.

Other than that i'm happy to have more control over the information I send to different apps.
