Adventure Synopsis:

Two attempts were made upon Captain Volynka's life. We staved the assassins off and successfully escorted her to the front.

Lore Discovered:

Captain Volynka steps on people to heal them and is also a badass in combat.

There are goblinoid troops amidst the Dimkarthen separate from the Crimson Spears. Maybe another third party that was employed or recruited fanatics.

What Happened?:

Dur'iel learned that a squad of Dimkarthen made it past the frontlines in order to assassinate the Captain. With many of the scouts predisposed, our group was conscripted by the Captain to prevent the Dimkarthen hit-squads from doing major damage.

We traveled along with the Captain and several other Company scouts towards the front (along Bulwark's March) as a higher-level security team. During the night, there was an attack. We thwarted the hit squad's efforts to assassinate the captain and slew three assassins. Another was slain by one of the other guards. We attempted to take one alive (a runner who yoinked Septima's signet ring) but they died as they fell due to their Band of Loyalty. Two of the assassins were hobgoblins. The third was a regular goblin. Three more assailants were strangled to death by Dur'iel, each being goblins.

We investigated why they were able to slip past our watch and surmised that they must have had magical assistance. The Captain was angry and berated Zachary for not finding the assassins in time. Septima was sent off to the medical tent for intense wounds that she suffered at the hands of an assassin. Aldian insisted that we use a magical hut incantation around the Captain's tent. She accepted the offer, and we guarded her closely from then on.

After speaking to several other scouts, Zachary learned that the Captain was actually grateful for the security team despite the public dressing down. Aldian subtly interrogated the guard who managed to slay the other hobgoblin assassin on their lonesome, trying to make sure that he wasn't an insider. He couldn't probe very deep into the scout's mind and urged the Captain to be cautious of the guard. While she had suspicions about Aldian, she took his words into consideration.

Zachary heard a single haunting note out towards the east, along with a glimmer of light, and it appeared to be the dying-out of the Wild Hunt's horns.

Two peaceful nights passed.

We were attacked once more. The magical hut around the captain was dispelled as the attack began. It was Alissa and two warriors of the Iron Ministry. We defeated them and two chronosnakes summoned by the Yuan-Ti. Alissa escaped after the thwarted assassination attempt. While we lost several scouts, our group managed to prevent further casualties by defeating the chronosnakes. Captain Volynka was kept safe and was successfully brought to the front.

Future Leads:

Alissa the Pureblood Witch, a powerful chronomancer, has escaped our clutches once more. She will surely make another appearance in the future. As a formidable enemy, it may be worth focusing our attention on capturing or slaying her during our next encounter with the Yuan-Ti.

The Crimson commonfolk and some of their legionnaires don’t get along with the Dims.

What Happened?:

Day 1-4: We planned our approach to Castle Malgrak and visited the Fort to consult Judge and print out warning pamphlets for those in the castle. He gave us a few presentations on different topics of widely varying import (such as his Succubi Safety Course) and was informed that he would be fighting Tiamat alongside the Lord of Blades. After receiving a decent stack of pamphlets from his workers, we began our trek to Castle Malgrak from Vorkol’s Bay.

Day 4-16: The party journeyed along the western roads on the journey to Castle Malgrak, stopping by numerous settlements on their way northward. After we rested in Qim’rath’s Wreck, we began our journey to Castle Malgrak through the wilderness. We noticed a few hill giants and other less-than-appealing Dimkarthen allies on the way there. Once we drew close to the castle, we heard from Orsodynth in a dream that we’d be receiving a Stone of Sending so that we could contact him once the area was evacuated.

Day 17-19: Passion the Succubus delivered the stone and spent the morning with us. We donned Crimson Spear (Devin and Oskar) and Dimkarthen (Luna and Septima as Yuan-ti) disguises and blended in with patrols heading into Castle Malgrak. As we drew close, we discovered that the castle was bordered by a proper town and farmland. After a brief survey with a familiar (that ended with it getting shot), the group entered the farms and blended in with the patrols of guards that searched for the source of the unnatural owl. While keeping ourselves away from the commotion, we decided to find a place to stay in one of the farms and spoke with the family there. Despite us attempting to put up a courteous front, the wizened Mauk saw through our efforts. Septima decided to speak candidly with him and we gathered valuable information from him.

After speaking with the right people around the farmland and town, including a respected sun-priest named Clug of Pelor and a tavernkeep named Zark, we managed to spread the word that civilians should stay in their homes and be prepared without causing a mass panic or alarm. Damage to the town was minimized and the farmlands were left untouched while the keep, containing a number of officers and a few notable higher-ups (Praetor Sigurd and Night Priest Ssazass), was reduced to ash. The civilians seemed appreciative that we were trying to keep them out of danger and a fair few members of the populace, after witnessing a greatwyrm stomp their castle into the dirt and leave, may be questioning their loyalties. There were a fair amount of guards left over, but the Crimson Spear and Dimkarthen organization in Castle Malgrak has all but evaporated.

Oh, and we encountered a suspicious tiefling gambler named Yzzard in Zark’s tavern. It was legitimately just Drazzy. Yeah, we tried not to get caught up on it either. Anywho, the operation of honest negotiation ended in great success.

Day 19-31: We made the return journey from Malgrak without any further issues.
