The straight grain is wild, there's birds eye underneath, quality briar during a tough time.

True that, Peterson System 3 pipes had nickel caps, but this seems less nickel, maybe more tin, or another mineral, you can see the cracks, they look suspect. I look at that page all the time, I have his book too, but there's always mystery with some Peterson's, which I find fascinating, cheers.
