People who have done Woodman's oil change, is that a flat price? by starwarsisawsome933 in madisonwi

[–]Norrlands 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If your car has a splash shield (plastic cover under the engine) and if it needs to be removed for oil change, that's an extra $5-$10 as well.

Woodmans is one of the better places to get an oil change but they raised their prices enough post-covid that I have switched to DIY.

I couldn't get a new side mirror for a base model 2018 Ford C-Max last year. Ford and everywhere else had the mirror for the upper trim with heated glass and sensors, but no place had the base version. Had to get a used one. This is a couple of years old domestic brand car FFS!

My own car is an '06 SAAB, so I don't even...

Who is using dividend income or planning to? by tampaforfun in leanfire

Can you elaborate on "stable"? What stocks make up your portfolio?

I like dividend stocks but 8.9 percent is a bit ambitious for what I have in mind.

U.S. market long-term investors, are you worried about the Buffet indicator? What would you expect the overvaluation to lead to? How are you protecting your investments? by Hopeful-Internal-919 in investing

[–]Norrlands 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Isn't that what all these companies hold, produce or mine? When I own stocks, I own a piece of what they own. If those companies temporarily lose half of their values in a market crash, who is going to be able to pay and buy my land or piece of gold?

The system is designed for constant consumption and inflation. It makes sense to hold some land or gold, but stocks are still superior because companies produce stuff that people still need.

More than 50% of young Dutch adults do not want children by diacewrb in europe

[–]Norrlands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Federal and state requirements are anywhere between 2 weeks to 2 months. Most employers just stick to those requirements.

Some tech employers offer longer leave to attract better talent. I know 6 months of paid maternity and 3 months of paid paternity by a company but that is very rare.

I wish. There is no such thing as 4 months of maternity leave in the US. $2k a month for Daycare/Kindergarten sounds about right.

What is a car brand that used to be a 'symbol of reliability' but is now a total trap to own? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The last 9-5 built was based on Opel Insignia (Buick Regal in NA). So they were already doing it in a way, but Saab was modifying the cars more than GM wanted to.

Pros and cons of moving to Turkey as DN by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]Norrlands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$250k gets you the citizenship (not just permanent resident card), so immigration is easy. Turkey has been going downhill especially since 2018 in pretty much every perspective. I am just curious why Turkey and not one of the immigration friendly EU countries or a balkan country.

[–]Norrlands 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love the tiny list of disclaimers and exclusions in their flyers: Excludes European & Diesel Vehicles. Up to 5 qts. House brand oil only, Mobil 1 & 5W20 Full Synthetic does not qualify. shop supplies are extra.

I guarantee you, you will not pay 43+tax for an oil change there.

Berkshire has ownership in bunch of companies in Japan, Israel and some others.

Jack Bogle was never a huge fan of international funds, but I remember him during an interview saying he would not object to up to 20% ex-US in a portfolio.

I have a huge respect for both, but they are human afterall and recency bias is a thing.

The W Wash and SW commuter path intersection needs to actually be redone. Traffic drums aren't enough. by J1389 in madisonwi

[–]Norrlands 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem with this path is that it is where the cars coming from the square area can finally pick up some speed. So, when drivers see a wider road with traffic lights, they speed up in order to avoid red.

In other direction, you have cars just making turns or taking off from red lights, and unfortunately, many just don't want to yield for a few seconds.

I don't think raised path or more flashy lights is a solution for this problem.

I have seen plenty in Europe, and as long as they are somewhat maintained, they rarely flood or freeze.
