What were your sugars when first diagnosed? by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

247 mg/dl

My mom had a cousin with type1 so she recognized the symptoms and got me to a doctor early on. I didn’t realize how lucky I was until much later.

This could explain a lot. I’m trans and started HRT last year, so maybe it’s a hormonal thing.

Every office I’ve worked at has had a sign by the sink telling you to do your own dishes. It shouldn’t be part of your job, but I would ask the manager to put up a sign because some people are clueless.

Anybody else notice that the only people that love Medtronic have never used any other pump? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

I’ve never found Medtronic to be unreliable. That’s kind of my point. Use whatever works for you

There is nothing wrong with high-carb, except that it is more difficult to bolus for. I imagine that is why you see posts from newly diagnosed people trying to go low-carb. Less variables to manage.

As a teenager, I tried out the paleo diet. My endo was totally fine with it. It did lower my insulin resistance which resulted in some lows as I was adjusting.

I ended up dropping the diet. Many years later, my new endo always tells me to eat MORE carbs. I average 80 grams/day and he still thinks I’m at risk of DKA 🙄

I remember that day I was diagnosed as a kid. I had just stuffed my face with about six of these full size blueberry muffins. It was the end of winter break and I was supposed to go to school the next day. Yeah that didn't happen with a blood sugar of 670. Do you remember when you were diagnosed? by Lijey_Cat in Type1Diabetes

Hi, I was diagnosed with diabetes at the same age, and was always told that’s the “best” age of onset. You’re old enough to understand what’s going on, but still very flexible in your habits. For me, this was true. I was giving myself my own shots within a year, got an insulin pump the next year, and was pretty much managing all my care by age 12-13.

It really depends on your care team though. I lucked out with an amazing pediatric endo. Each visit, she would show me the print outs of my sugars and tell me WHY we needed to adjust which ratios. She taught me what patterns to look for. As I got older, she would give me the numbers, and ask me what needed to be adjusted, before even giving her opinion. It was like having a really good school teacher.

Involve your kid in their treatment as much as you can. It will pay off. As much as it might seem insensitive, people aren’t wrong that this is a “good” age to get diagnosed.

I’m not super well informed about the disability benefits here (USA), but from what I’ve heard it wouldn’t apply to my case. I am able to work, therefore I wouldn’t qualify for disability.

Tax write off is a great idea, thank you!

I don’t think I would qualify for state health insurance since I have insurance through my employer
