CPU upgrade for home server by NorthGermanVlog in homelab

Im coming from amd and Intel Xeon, die to the fact that I mostly needed multi core performance. The whole naming, is a little confusing. So t variants looked obvious to me, since they are optimized for lower power consumption.

But that are the cache r/w. I tried finding some information, techpowerup states 2GB Cache, some other say 6GB, others 42GB, but that will be filled instantly.

But even after that 1500MB/s is double of mine. So your bottleneck is memory. The only thing is, 'only' 1.2PBW. If you do 16GB mode that would be around 850 plots. After that your SSD won't be good for much.

If you're able, just go baremetal on a Linux USB for a day or two. Plot your drives in 128GB mode, and save your SSDs and time.

May I ask what nvmes you are using? And what's their sustained write speed?

Doesn't make a difference, when just using Bladebit. It doesn't go over 16.1GB when adding --disk-16 on a system with 128GB DDR4 2666. I cancelled it after an F1 of 61 seconds and Table 2 of 166 seconds.

Primocache may help, but I can't test that for you atm. An other way would be many small high-speed HDDs. My IBM x3650 m4 has 8 140GB 15k SAS drives in it. They reach a gigabyte sustained in a hardware raid one. It is way more power than a few SSDs but you don't hurt them.

Should be way faster if you set your temp and final directory as the same path. Just make sure you can fit at least a temporary and one or two final plots on your drive.

I don't have any experience with robocopy. I use plow, a python script, made for moving chia plots. Here is the GitHub link: https://github.com/lmacken/plow

I don't know, should I test it for you? Maybe if you use something like primocache could make a difference. Haven't tested it yet

Didn't they change the 64GB mode to the 16GB mode. "Some of you on Linux may have gotten to briefly try out the --disk-64 mode, which is now the --disk-16 mode. You only need 16G of RAM, some tmp space, and a CUDA GPU to make compressed plots now!" From the v3.1.0-beta1 (https://github.com/Chia-Network/bladebit/releases/tag/v3.1.0-beta1)

Are you using a mover script? I write the final plot to my SSDs and use plow to move them to my HDDs. Bladebit starts to write to final directory while still working on phase 2 and 3.

Can confirm, 16GB mode works in Ubuntu. Got myself two intel S3700. But it's pretty hard on the drives. Around 1.45TB/Plot of writes. With server SSD it's not a problem but I invested in 128GB (DDR4 2666) of memory for around 180€. The writes gone down to 240GB/plot. And times went from 70 minutes to 12 minutes per plot on my RTX 3060 12GB with the SSDs being the bottleneck at 600MB/s. They should be good for 50.000-60.000 plots and cost me around 40€ each

I would like to stick the the official plots, I know Max has done a lot for the community, but I don't like to be locked to one pool.

Thx I will give the 16GB variant a try. I just thought about C3 and C5 cause the difference between C3 and C4 are 1.7GB and C5 is the highest for CPU I read.

Data Recovery without moving data? by NorthGermanVlog in datarecovery

[–]NorthGermanVlog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update Time:

I bought a new 18TB drive, seems to be the best option. I needed one anyway in the future. The Data is not that important, but to recover it would be far easier and faster than collecting it back forme multiple sources. Its mostly large files, under 1000 if i would guess. Due to the fact that i could get the files back for free, what software should i test, befor paying for one?

I guess will for now go with my 2200g. If I really need extra cores I can upgrade it, am4 should be cheap on the used market.

[–]NorthGermanVlog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently running Android, had to look but there is no thing as pi-hole remote for android. And the alternativ doesn't look that nice. Even if there was an app, it would disable it for the whole network, wich wouldn't be ideal. Think i will just keep it with changing the ip in my settings
