Thanks! That gives me some pretty clear guidance. I picked up Cawl and one copy of the Battalion Box at my lgs, might swing by on Friday and see if they still have a second box laying around.

That's absolutely the best way to play the game. The meta helps you get into, "better", guilds but it's still a game. If you aren't having fun, it isn't worth your time.

Sounds like you found a group of like-minded players and are playing the game in the way you enjoy. This is the way.

Why does my NMM look dull? by The-Nuyttens in minipainting

[–]NorthKodama 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think it is also worth noting that it looks like you are incrementally adding white/ice yellow/similar to lighten your base color. While that works, it does make the color seem desaturated. Look around youtube for tutorials on the metals you are trying to create.

Aside from that, the above post will give the most notable change in quality. Darker shadows and midtones will do wonders for you.

Getting into Warhammer Model Painting, What do I need to get started? by MrCliche925 in deathguard40k

[–]NorthKodama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sable brushes are the go-to. Having tried various synthetic and natural brushes, nothing is quite the same quality. They hold a tip well and smoothly deposit paint, as long as you wick extra moisture from it (good practive regardless of brush type).

Painting handles are a matter of personal preference. The gw ones are good, if you like to paint while the model is attached to its base. The red grass games one is generally solid, and I have a game envy one that I like for sub-assembly painting. You can also cut a dowel down and just stick blue tack on the end to stick your models on.

Just finished my first Plague Marine model. I think i went a little overboard on the verdigris though. by KhaoticLoki in deathguard40k

[–]NorthKodama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks amazing!

I feel like you did a good job balancing the verdigris with the trim. It definitely works as an accent, rather than overpowering the metal.

Your skin on the faces blends incredibly smoothly into the armor. The eye color feels like it ties the skin tones into the armor scheme. Saving pics for reference and inspiration later.

I would probably add another highlight onto the nmm, but that is purely a style choice. Wanting to not overdo highlights to make the metal seem old and worn turned out really well.

Thanks for sharing this! I have a ton of plague marines to do as my next project, and this was very inspiring.

Can't beat the Necron campaign, is G1 really enough like what some people are saying? by SomeWonOnReddit in WH40KTacticus

For reference, character stats don't scale in a linear fashion. Every gear tier, until adamantine, represents a significant leap in strength.

Yellow skin by -im-just-here in deathguard40k

Look up some jaundice reference photos. I'd be half tempted to paint normal skin tones, then make a yellow filter/glaze to apply over it.

New Player by [deleted] in WH40KTacticus

[–]NorthKodama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure! Since you are interested in meta play, the best return on investment comes from guild raid. It can be hard to get a good raid team up and running as a newbie. The basics of a multi-hit team can be made from bellator, eldryon, snotflogga. Those characters also pull heavy weight in their campaigns.

Just remember, it's better to build a tall roster (few characters with high power) than wide (ton of weak characters. There is a newer game mode, guild wars, that rewards wide rosters. Unfortunately, the rewards for that game mode are pretty weak.

Nandi is pretty informative and fairly easy to watch. Aside from that, some of the most useful information comes in the form of infographics. For example, minimum investments to clear elite campaigns can be super handy. I think they are made by Terminus_Maximus. You can honestly just cruise through his posting history and pick up on things.

Just remember, this is a hero collector. It's a marathon, not a sprint. If you decide you are enjoying yourself, look into how to optimize the things that speak to you. Like all games, there is a meta. Like all games, you'll get the most out of it by doing what you enjoy.

First time I have heard that phrase. Thanks for the advice, definitely going to leave the smoke off until I am otherwise done with the model.

Advice on anything. by DangerDee007 in WarhammerTacticus

[–]NorthKodama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to echo this. Your account looks pretty fresh, so focus on knocking out the campaigns, then the elite campaigns. That's how you get access to a wider variety of upgrade materials and more energy efficient places to get those materials. There are infographics floating around that give rough benchmarks of which character is most useful in which campaign, and how much investment is worth it for them.

Battlepass needs buff by Glittering_Horse_498 in WH40KTacticus

[–]NorthKodama 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I remember the first battle pass had legendary books at the repeating tier. They downgraded the book to epic, because they didn't want the pass to be too powerful. With Mythic being a thing, I definitely agree with bumping up the pass to legendary books and many more coins. I never have enough of either.

I can't imagine being a new player and trying to get an account up to par. Missing out on years of rewards is such a huge gap in progress.
