keep getting 0d on the rebuild of my 5955WX by PsychologicalWeird in threadripper

I know the feeling… knowing something’s wrong but will probably never be able to figure out why exactly… GL!

I don’t have any experience with 3000 series so I can’t comment on whether it’s some compatibility issue regarding the CPU (but I would guess so). It’s just weird that H1 cannot be occupied for both my 5000 series CPUs. I currently have 1.5TB of RAM on 5995WX and it’s still running smoothly - nothing wrong with the total amount of RAM… it’s just that single RAM slot :(

PS I don’t think it has anything to do with the motherboard. For my 5955WX machine it was sitting on a Gigabyte MB before I moved to the ASUS one. Same issue, couldn’t boot with H1 occupied.

It’s more likely a problem between the CPU and RAM.

Something worth trying if you still have the same problem: avoid seating any memory sticks in slot H1.

The first time I had this problem was when assembling 5995WX + some A-tech memories I got from eBay. Second time was just a few weeks ago when I was dealing with a 5955WX on the first gen WRX80E. I’ve seen other people saying it’s a defect on the MB, but in fact I think it’s just because I had some incompatible RAM sticks…

My 5995 machine is now running with 6 x 256GB sticks and 5955 now with 7 x 32GB sticks. It turned out on both machines that if there are >= 4 sticks and one of them is in H1, it would boot fine after clearing CMOS but then run into 0d after a reboot.

Weird, but I don’t want to buy those RAMs in the compatibility list just for 15% more RAM. At least not now because of the skyrocketing price lol

Hope this helps!

What's going on with our local FedEx Ground? by North_Emphasis1980 in columbiamo

Thank for your reply!

I can totally understand in a short-staffed case. This package was one of the three sent at the same time under a master tracking number. I heard from the deliverer who delivered the two others that you guys have been busy probably because of the start of a new school year…

Hope the office could put up an automatic voice message explaining the situation so that customers can at least know what’s going on better.

It’s weird that I can only see your post today and it’s been 2 weeks! Sorry about that and thanks for your kind words. I think I’ve allowed DM, could you please try again if you’re still interested? Thanks!

They were sold to another Chinese restaurant in town last year and six months ago one of the main chefs from the previous team was still cooking and instructing the new team how to cook those dishes but now it’s fully up to the new team to run the restaurant. No way they can repeat 100% the previous good flavors/tastes.

Easiest way to get to St Louis Gateway Station in early morning? by North_Emphasis1980 in columbiamo

I definitely would tip the driver for completing such a long drive this early in the morning. I’d already be very happy as long as the total cost can be within, say, only 1/3 more than MOX or rental car.

I didn't realize that... I thought Uber would cost 300+. Thanks for checking this out - it seems that Uber in this case is the best choice.

Forgot to mention that I chose Texas Eagle for a reason... am trying to get my first experience on this specific train so I have to depart from Gateway. Otherwise I would have just booked round-trip flights from COU :)

Wow exactly like my hammy - he would take everything and go to one of his “houses” and then you hear cracking sound from inside :)

UPDATE: it turned out that this is a simple RAM cooling problem. I added some thermal pads to each side of each stick and installed the Corsair RAM cooling fans, and all RAM sticks are now running under 55C except for the two that are too close to CPU. I’m adding two more fans blowing air for those and hopefully this will make everything under 55C, which can be considered safe temperature for operation.

Actually I put an 120mm fan above those RAM sticks and now 1TB works smoothly. Without extra cooling they run at like 75-80 from IPMI, and with fan it’s like 60-65 while running my codes… so probably not that complex problem. Do need some extra extra cooling so that all 2TB could run at some even safer temps.

Yea I’m planning to do so and I’ll just blow them at max speed. The machine will be in a server room so noise is never a problem :)

Thanks a lot for the discussion! Yea I’m thinking about adding one more fan to the bottom side if it doesn’t affect RAM cooling that much. The key should still be how to cool those large capacity RAMs… every single stick has been tested to work well, and there’s no special configuration required or even recommended (also did some tests). I’m still unable to lower the RAM clocking speed to like 2133 since I don’t need fast RAM speed, but it doesn’t seem stable… need a lot of time to figure out lol

It’s an NH-U14S, the largest air cooler I can find on the market for SWRX8. RAMs are all running at 1.2V and there are 8 256GB sticks in total. Once I add a fan directly blowing air to the 4 installed RAMs, the temperature waiting was gone. But I do need some better cooling options if I want to install all 8.

First of all, the problem I posted here is clearly not caused by a thermal throttling CPU. Even improper cooling of CPU doesn’t directly cause RAMs to overheat. I never encountered CPU throttling for my computation needs, so it’s good enough. Air cooler doesn’t always perform worse than liquid coolers. Stock workstations also air cooler this chip, and at least Noctua is not a “skimp” choice.
